The station is well-connected to Oslo and can be reached by bus, metro, tram, or taxi. There is also an Airport Express Train that can get you from the airport to the station quickly if you’re in a rush. The high-speed train runs several times per hour and takes roughly 20 minutes.

You’ll find all the amenities you need when connecting to Oslo from the railway station. There are shops, restaurants, and grocery stores open most hours of the day within the vicinity. Just a short walk from the station, there are enormous shopping complexes to get everything needed for your trip.

Oslo Central Station formed with the connection of the older east and west stations. The Oslo Tunnel allows passengers to move between the two buildings and reach the station’s 19 tracks. In total, four railway companies operate services in Oslo and surrounding areas.

Attractions and activities near Oslo Central Station

  • Akershus Fortress: If you want to delve into Oslo’s history, this should be the first stop on your list. Dating to the late 13th century, Akershus Fortress protected Oslo during the Middle Ages. Oslo’s vulnerable defences left the city prone to attacks, and a new fortification helped it ward off many sieges.
In the late 16th century, the fortress began to also serve as a royal residence and became the political center of Norway. The medieval castle was strategic enough to relocate Oslo around it in 1624. From that point forward, the fortress primarily served as an ornate palace for Norwegian royalty.
Tours of the fortress are offered to the public today, and it hosts numerous events throughout the year. There are often ceremonies held at the castle, and crowds gather for joyous celebrations.
  • Oslo Opera House: The modernist Oslo Opera House sits only a few minutes from Oslo Central Station and a must-see for anyone interested in fine arts. Featuring the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, many of Norway’s talented performers frequently grace the stage. Situated in the Bjørvika neighborhood, its central location makes it convenient for many residents and travelers to catch an outstanding performance.
The elaborate design is worth checking out and viewing the building from afar makes it appear to jut from the water. Much of the structure is made from white Italian Carrara marble, and it won numerous architectural awards. Beautiful artwork decorates the interior, and spectators are treated to a stunning visual display before their show begins.
  • Oslo Cathedral: The beautiful church is one of Oslo’s cherished symbols and played host to many public events over the past several centuries. A devastating fire destroyed the former cathedral in the 17th century, and a new building replaced the church after moving the town.
The newly built cathedral didn’t last long and went up in flames decades later. Another structure would replace that one, and it would go on to become one of Oslo’s most beautiful places. Today’s cathedral is at Stortorvet square, and its tower dominates the surrounding area.
Magnificent altars and stained-glass windows adorn the interior, and an enormous organ sits beneath the ceiling. There are even routine organ concerts due to the fantastic acoustics inside the building. The colorful paintings have a distinct style compared to other cathedrals, and the Last Supper illustration on the main altar is unlike anything you’ve seen before.
