About Siena

Located in Tuscany, Siena is one of the most beautiful cities in Italy. It's a medieval city dating back to around 500 BC and is famed for its unique culture and history. Siena is known for the Palio, a twice-yearly horse race around the city's main square, Piazza del Campo.

It's thought that Siena was originally founded by Etruscans. The name Siena stems from the original Roman town, Saena Julia, which was founded by Senius, son of Remus. Siena didn't thrive under the Romans and only became an important part of Tuscany under Lombard rule between the 4th and 8th centuries. Siena was ruled as a republic between the 12th and 16th centuries, which was when many of its historic buildings were constructed.

Today, Siena is one of the most popular vacation destinations in Tuscany, thanks to its sublime Gothic architecture and array of historic sights.

Attractions and activities in Siena

  • Piazza del Campo: Siena's main square, the Piazza del Campo is a must-see and makes the perfect base from which to explore. This medieval square is often regarded as one of the best of its kind in Europe and is one reason why Siena is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located at the crossroads of Siena's three main historic roads, Piazza del Campo was constructed as a center for commerce in the late 13th century. With a circumference of over 1,000 feet, the Piazza features a pointed design, separated into nine sections, thought to resemble the cloak of the Virgin Mary.
One of the most famous features of the Piazza del Campo is Fonte Gaia. A lavish white-marble fountain with carvings depicting Roman matrons and the Virgin Mary with child, it is considered the piazza's centerpiece. Built in the 14th century, the Fonte Gaia was a feat of engineering, with pipes bringing water to the fountain from over 18 miles away. The best time to visit Piazza del Campo is during the Palio, which takes place on July 2nd and August 16th. This grand horse race around the piazza has taken place since the 6th century and is an integral part of Sienese culture and history.
  • Duomo di Siena: Also known as Siena Cathedral, the Duomo di Siena is the city's most important religious building. Construction of the cathedral began in the early 13th century and was designed in classic Gothic and Romanesque styles. Duomo di Siena's sublime façade is one of the best in the country. The upper façade features a wonderful mosaic of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary, and around the windows and doorways are intricate sculptures ranging from saints to gargoyles.
The interior of the Duomo di Siena is no less impressive. The nave boasts a hexagonal gilded dome ceiling, while the floor is adorned with a mosaic of the she-wolf of Siena. While exploring the cathedral, you'll also come across artworks by world-famous Italian artists, including statues by Michelangelo and Donatello. You won't be able to bring any large bags into the Duomo di Siena, so stop off at a Siena luggage storage service first.
  • Palazzo Pubblico: Sat overlooking the Piazza del Campo is Siena's historic city hall, Palazzo Pubblico. The hall was built for the Republic of Siena's government in the 13th century. The interior is unusual as it features dozens of frescoes commissioned by the government rather than the church. These frescoes are present throughout the city hall and depict famous battles and key historical events. While visiting the Palazzo Pubblico, ensure you climb the Torre del Mangia. Dominating Siena's skyline, the Torre del Mangia stands at 334 feet. The top of Torre del Mangia provides sweeping views across the city and is a must-visit while in Siena.
