The Split Port is the biggest passenger port in Croatia and ranks 11th for the whole of the Mediterranean, seeing over 5 million passengers pass through each year. Dating back to the 4th Century BC, Split Port has had a long and prosperous existence. It was originally founded by Greek settlers who used the Port for trading. Over the years, the Port was ruled by various groups, depending on who had rights over the territory. By the 19th Century, the region of Dalmatia had become somewhat of an economic hub and this was largely due to Split Port.
Today, Split Port is used extensively for trade and tourism.
