About Tarragona
Tarragona certainly has a location that works for it. Located on Spain's Mediterranean coast around 60 miles south of Barcelona, Tarragona is blessed with a warm ocean and seemingly endless sunshine. Those things by itself are often enough to make a place worth visiting.
But because of its Mediterranean location, Tarragona is a city with very ancient roots. The founding date of the city is unknown, though one local legend puts it as far back as 2400 BC. What is known is that the Phoenicians built a settlement here back in the fifth century BC. It was enlarged and expanded by the Romans and became a rich trading center. Later, it was occupied by the Moors in the seventh century and became part of Catalonia in the 12th.
Tarragona was sieged multiple times during the Peninsular War between Spain and France in the 19th century. Its port and strong fortifications made it an important city to hold for anyone who wanted to control the region. Tarragona was captured by the French and incorporated into the French empire before being recaptured by Spanish forces.
Nowadays, much of Tarragona's wealth comes from its port and its University. Tourism is also an important part of the local economy, aided in part by Spain's most popular theme park, PortAventura World.
Things to do near Tarragona
Any city with as long a history of occupation as Tarragona is bound to have some impressive historic monuments. But it's important not to neglect the more natural side of Tarragona. Along with the fascinating relics of bygone chapters of history, Tarragona's coastline keeps visitors coming to the city.
- Live out your gladiator dreams at Tarragona Amphitheater. Built in the first century, this Roman arena is partially ruined, but that only makes it more atmospheric. Of course, its location overlooking the Mediterranean Sea doesn't hurt.
- Enjoy the Gothic architecture of Tarragona Cathedral. This 12th-century church has been the spiritual heart of the city for much longer, with a temple situated here in Roman times. The current Cathedral is a stunning building to visit, and the area around it well worth exploring.
- Appreciate Tarragona's historic importance with a tour of the Roman walls. The city walls date back to the third century BC, but the Romans weren't the only ones who needed to defend Tarragona. Other rulers added to the fortifications throughout the following centuries, and a walk along the ramparts takes you through every chapter of Tarragona's long history.
- Lose yourself in Part Alta. These narrow streets and old stone buildings were the heart of the ancient city. Now, they make the perfect place to wander and experience the beauty of Tarragona. Plus, you’ll find no end of bars and restaurants to keep you refreshed.
- Experience the natural environment along the Tamarit-Punta de la Mora coastline. A golden beach leads to a rugged coastline studded with pine forests and full of tiny secluded coves. It's a great place to stretch your legs and enjoy the beauty of the Mediterranean.

Younger children will love the Sesame Street area, whereas older kids will prefer the thrilling roller coasters. You'll also find plenty of shows and places to eat, and you could easily spend a day or even more at this park.
