About Vancouver Airport

Located on Sea Island between Richmond and Vancouver, Vancouver International Airport has been in service since 1931. This airport serves more than 26 million passengers per year and has won awards as the best North American airport 10 years in a row and best airport in the world for three years. What makes it the best airport, though? Maybe it is the overall friendliness of the staff at all levels from the coffee cart barista to the pilots who will often come out and greet passengers before or after a flight.

The accolades could be due to the amount of shopping, restaurants, and bars available in and around the airport. You can even find some amazing deals at one of the 15 airport shops inside. Or head outside to the McArthur Glen Designer Outlet for a plethora of shops almost next door. They boast over 75 elite boutiques and a dozen restaurants from Adidas to Zwilling and Banana Republic to Watch Station.

Vancouver itself is a seaport in western Canada in the lower mainland of British Columbia. It has been the host to many events like the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and the World Police and Fire Games in both 1989 and 2009. The city is full of fun attractions, restaurants, and culture from museums to symphonies and orchestras.

Fun Fact: All the gray squirrels at Stanley Park are the descendants of eight pairs of squirrels that were received as a gift in 1909 from New York City.

Things to do in Vancouver Airport

Are you on a layover at Vancouver International Airport? Perhaps you are heading into this unique city for a week of business meetings. No matter the reason, take the time to see the sights. We recommend the following:

  • Visit the fish at the airport. There are two aquariums here. The main one has over 850 sea creatures in a 30-thousand-gallon tank on Level 3. The other one is the jellyfish aquarium with over 100 moon jellyfish on Level 4.
  • Feeling stressed? Go to one of the Absolute Spa locations for a refresher. You can even get a massage, a pedicure, or a manicure.
  • Get some selfies with Aboriginal art. From the Welcome Figures by Susan Point on Level 2 by the escalators to the Lorne Balshine Collection of over 75 sculptures, you can spot these works of art all over the airport.
  • Check out the conservation area right next door. The 346-acre Sea Island Conservation Area (SICA) on the north side of Sea Island is full of local flora and fauna.
  • Take a walk along the beach. Yes, there are beaches on Sea Island as well. Get some pictures off the jetty that goes out into the Sturgeon Bank.
  • Eat some food. There are a plethora of restaurants to choose from. If you want to be waited on, head to GateC32 for Tim Horton’s Café or Vera’s Burger Shack at Gate C43. For a fast-food fix, go to A&W or Subway on Level 3 before security.
  • Go shopping. The airport has a huge shop on Level 3 with all sorts of Canadian items like candy from local shops, wine jelly, maple syrups, and other maple goodies.
  • Visit Flight Path Park so you can stand on top of the world. There is actually a globe to climb up on where you can watch the airplanes.
