Niagara Falls may be a tourist attraction in the United States, but in Ontario, Canada, it is a bustling city. Located on the banks of the Niagara River, the city has a population of just over 88,000. Although the town was not incorporated until 1903, European settlers were known to have been there as early as the 1670s. The first known settler was a French priest and missionary named Louis Hennepin. 

Although the city was named Stamford and then Clifton, it was changed to Niagara Falls in 1881. A village of Niagara Falls nearby, referred to as Niagara Falls South, separated it from the City of Niagara Falls, but it merged with Stamford in 1962. Tourism began in the 1800s and has been a big part of the city’s income since then. 

The cool temps in Niagara Falls make it a pleasant place to visit in the summer with highs in the upper 70s and lows in the 60s. Winters are cold, though, with highs in the 30s and lows dipping into the teens. Although many of the main attractions center around the actual falls, there is a lot of culture to be found in town. Museums, art galleries, and performing arts centers are popular with both locals and tourists as well.

Even though the falls are beautiful and magical, there are other things to see and do in Niagara Falls. Learn more about the history of the falls and the city at the museums or take a walk through one of the art galleries. 

Niagara History Museum: Located on Ferry Street, this fantastic museum will take you on a tour of the War of 1812 with the Gale Family War Gallery. The World War Women exhibit is also a fascinating display with personal stories of the women who volunteered to help in the Canadian War. Artifacts such as old weapons, uniforms, and memorabilia are on display year-round. 

Battle Ground Hotel Museum: Not far from the Niagara History Museum on Lundy’s Lane is the 19th-century hotel and tavern, Battle Ground Hotel Museum. Get a guided tour and presentation about the village tavern and early tourism of the battlefield. Travel back in time to the 1850s when the small town became famous from one of the bloodiest battles in Canada. See the taproom, the Lady’s Parlour, and the kitchen with a cast iron stove.

Movieland Wax Museum Niagara Falls: On Clifton Hill among the bright lights and sounds of the main attractions, the Movieland Wax Museum is next to the Midway and in front of the Sky Wheel. Get some awesome selfies with Jimmy Fallon from the Tonight Show, Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump, Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, and Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson in Jumanji. Be sure to stop and get some souvenirs at the gift shop before you leave.

Even though Niagara Falls is mainly a tourist town, you can find some regular shopping centers and malls to shop at if you want to get away from the crowds. They also have markets and shops where you will find unique items and antiquities as well as department stores and supermarkets to browse in.

Malls: Canada One Outlets on Lundy’s Lane has more than 20 name brand outlets where you can get quality items at bargain prices. Urban Planet, Tommy Hilfiger, and Coach are just a few of the shops in this mall. Galleria Shops on Fallsview Boulevard is a nice place to peruse the dozens of shops and eateries. From Bijoux Couture to the Wine Rack, there are some fun places to explore and enjoy at the Fallsview Casino Resort.

Duty Free America: There are three Duty Free Americas shopping centers on the three bridges crossing into Canada where you can get items tax free. Rainbow Bridge has great savings on fashion, chocolates, tobacco items, and alcohol. The shop on Lewiston/Queenston Bridge has cosmetics, jewelry, and fragrances. And, you can find the same and more at the Peace Bridge shopping center. 

Markets: The Niagara Farmers Market on Sylvia Place has been a popular spot for locals and tourists for over 50 years. They have vendors inside and out with meat, produce, and handicrafts. Also, the Canada Trading Center on Clifton Hill has a plethora of gifts and souvenirs to choose from. They have native artwork, crafts, t-shirts, jewelry, and much more. 

Canadian cuisine is not much different than American cuisine. Still, the restaurants do have unique dishes that are based on their French-Canadian background. Everyone knows about Canadian bacon and maple syrup, but not everyone has heard of poutine (French fries with gravy and cheese curds) or the Nanaimo bar, which is a coconut and graham cracker crust with custard in the middle and chocolate on top. 

Local Food: Easy Street Sandwiches and Treats on McLeod Road is known for its excellent breakfast poutine, jerk chicken, and friendly staff. AG Inspired Cuisine on Magdalen Street is a bit fancier with crispy duck pate, maple-spiced pork belly, lobster with cognac butter, and boar sausages. The Blue Line on Montrose Road serves humongous plates full of all sorts of food. From the beaver burger to the Canadian club sandwich, you will love their unique combos. 

Fast Food: The Big Sizzle on Fallsview Boulevard has a wide variety of poutine mixtures, as well as burgers, fries, and thick shakes. Garrison’s Grill on Thorold Stone Road is a quaint little diner with some of the best Philly steaks in town and the best taco salad in Canada. And Jake’s Chip Wagon on Saint Clair Avenue has the best fries in the country, according to the locals. But don’t ask for ketchup because they don’t have any and you won’t need it anyway.

Dessert: Beaver Tails on Oneida Lane in Clifton Hills is the best place in town to get beaver tails. These huge donuts are unique, and they have so many toppings and flavors you could go there every day and not get bored. If you want some ice cream, head to Sweet Jesus Ice Cream Shop on Falls Avenue. They are known for their vegan ice cream as well. But don’t leave Canada without trying the fudge from the Fudge Shop on Clifton Hill by the Sky Wheel. Watch them make your fudge while you wait.
