About Atlanta Airport

Located in the middle of Atlanta, Georgia, the Atlanta Airport has over 110 million passengers a year. It began as a small airport named Candler Field in 1925 but was renamed Atlanta Airport in 1942. It became the world’s busiest airport in 1957 and still holds that title. With two terminals, seven concourses, and 195 gates, there is plenty of space for all those passengers. 

While you are at Atlanta Airport, make sure you stroll through to see the Airport Art. From paintings to models, murals and sculptures, local and international artists share their work all over the airport, so it is easy to find. The airport also has over 50 retailers from shops to kiosks where you can grab souvenirs, browse for items for yourself, or get something you need like a newspaper or phone charger. 

You can also find dozens of eateries and lounges for when you get hungry or need a drink. Knock back a beer or two or enjoy a meal at one of the great restaurants like Varsity Hot Dogs or Paschal’s Southern Cuisine. Nap on a cozy sofa in one of the Minute Suites in Concourse B or watch television on HDTV. 

Fun Fact: The airport used to be a racetrack named the Atlanta Speedway before it was bought by the mayor to become an airfield in 1925.

For film buffs, the Atlanta Movie Tours on Nelson Street is a fantastic way to spend the day just 15 minutes from the airport. You can take a private movie location bus tour for three hours of visiting movie sets, learning about the industry, and enjoying some snacks. The Big Zombie Tour is perfect for those Walking Dead fans. Visit the spot where seasons one, five, and nine were filmed or where seasons two through six were filmed. You can also see a variety of locations of specific scenes like Glenn’s dumpster scene. Other tours include the Atlanta Heritage Tour, Best of Atlanta Tour, Castleberry Hill Backlot, Hero Tour, Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind Tour, and the Atlanta Upside Down Tour. On Piedmont Avenue, just 25 minutes from the airport, you can see thousands of plants and flowers in several smaller gardens inside and out. The Camellia Garden has 25 different species, including several rare varieties. The Carnivorous Garden has a variety of meat-eating plants like the white pitcher plant, flypaper traps like butterworts, and snapping traps like the famous Venus flytrap. See the huge display of orchids at the Fuqua Orchid Center and the Tropical High Elevation House. The Magnolia Garden collection has over 200 species, and the Hydrangea Garden has 20 species on display. The Rose Garden is one of the most popular sections with the scents you can smell from far away. From Damasks to Bourbons and Noisettes to the apricot orange Livin’ Easy Floribunda Rose, you will need to get some selfies in this vibrant garden.
