View CityAbout Bangkok Airport
Bangkok Airport is the unofficial name of the Suvarnabhumi Airport, an international airport serving the city of Bangkok. The Bangkok Airport became the central global hub in 2007 after the Don Mueang International Airport downgraded to cater to the lower cost airlines. Originally opened in 2005, the completion of the airport was delayed until 2007 because of the superstitions of the construction workers. The Bangkok Airport was built over a graveyard, and construction workers believed the spirits of those buried there were wandering through the unfinished airport. The Thai Airports Authority had to step in and hold a ceremony where Buddhist monks came to appease the ghosts by chanting prayers and incantations. Once the spirits were officially laid to rest, the completion of the airport could move forward.
Today, visitors to Bangkok Airport can relax in one of the lounges throughout and recharge their electronic devices. It's also easy to find a snack or full meal at one of the bistros or restaurants inside the airport. Pick up some travel necessities or find fun, unique souvenirs at one of the shops. No matter if your flight is delayed, you have a planned long layover, or you are arriving on holiday, there is something for you to do here. Stay inside the airport or venture out and enjoy the sights nearby.
Fun Fact: In 2012, Bangkok Airport was the most popular place in the world for Instagram photos.
