About Capitol Hill

Denver’s Capitol Hill is the perfect place for anyone to spend the day. Located right in the middle of downtown Denver, you are close to everything in the city. The centerpiece of the neighborhood, though, is the Colorado State Capitol on East Colfax. Besides being the home of many governmental offices, it is also a popular place to visit. Built in the late 1800s, the first thing you will notice at the Capitol Building is the golden dome. It is made of genuine gold leaf, which was an addition made as a remembrance of the gold rush of Colorado in 1908. The 272-foot building makes a stunning photo with the Rocky Mountains in the background.

Once you get inside, you’ll see rare rose marble called Colorado Rose Onyx and Yule Marble. The stained-glass windows are dedicated to events or people related to Colorado history. The hall with portraits of every president is a great place for selfies. The statue out front is of an American Indian standing over a bison, built for the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. The neighborhood around the building is considered one of the most multicultural areas in Denver with a large number of eateries, clubs, bars, shops, and concert venues. 

Fun Fact: One of the survivors of the Titanic, Molly Brown, lived in Capitol Hill most of her adult life and was an activist for the rights of workers as well as women and children’s literacy.   

Things to do in Capitol Hill

No matter where you go, there are places you have to see and things you have to do. However, many places are overlooked because they are not as well-known. In a city like Capitol Hill, the majority of people head straight for the Capitol Building, which is understandable. But there are other cool spots to check out, too. Luggage Storage Near Denver Botanic Gardens

Less than five minutes from Capitol Hill on York Street, the Denver Botanic Gardens is a living museum with thousands of different species like cacti and other succulents, tropical flowers, and alpine plants. You’ll see a daylily garden, lilac garden, sculptures, a rose collection, and much more. The water gardens at the Four Towers Pool include a large selection of plants like canna, lotus, and waterlilies. There are even several herbariums and a collection of arthropods like spiders and insects. It’s not all about plant life either. The Science Pyramid has a plethora of information about people and plants and how water connects us all. The art exhibits include botanical art illustrations, wonders and oddities, and sculptures by a variety of artisans. Luggage Storage Near the Denver Zoo

Plan to see the animals at the Denver Zoo on Steele Street about 10 minutes from the Capitol. They have 70 species from the African Black-Footed Penguin to the Western Lowland Gorilla. Right at the entrance, the Benson Predator Ridge has lions, tigers, bears, and more. Then you can head to Giraffe Meadow to see the tallest animals in the world. To the west are Harmony Hill, the Shore, and the Edge, as well as the tropical discovery building. And to the east are the pachyderms, Emerald Forest, Monkey Island, Primate Panorama, Bird World, and the train. Grab some grub at one of the nine eateries like Brown Bear BBQ or Samburu Grill, and don’t forget to stop at the gift shop. Don’t bring your bags because they are not allowed. Learn something new at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, which is 15 minutes from Capitol Hill on Colorado Boulevard. Explore the science center to learn about zoology, space sciences, health, and anthropology. The Discovery Zone has activities as well as artifacts like building methods and fossils. The Egyptian Mummies display is a popular one with everyone, and the genetics lab has some fascinating stations with DNA and PCR experiments. See the gems and minerals exhibit and the beautiful gem carvings. And the North American Indian Culture exhibit has tools, clothing, and shelter examples as well as basketry, weavings, and pottery. Don’t miss the IMAX theater where they show various movies like the Dinosaurs of Antarctica and the Hidden Pacific.
