Situated on a volcanic island and surrounded by the clear blue waters of the Aegean, this has to be one of the most quintessentially beautiful of the many islands that Greece has to offer. The village itself is home to just 1600 residents, but what a home.

Decked out with the classic picture postcard whitewashed buildings with their blue doors and shutters, the town itself begs you to stay. Combine that with amazing ocean and volcano views, excellent hiking, and that famous laid-back Greek hospitality, and this the sort of place you will find difficult to get tired of.

The village itself is dissected by narrow cobbled streets that almost demand to be explored and Bounce makes that easier for you. They partner with local businesses so that it is easy to store your luggage and dive into your adventure without having to drag your bags with you.

Things to do in and around Fira

The whole island of Santorini is small and accessible and it lends itself perfectly to the holidaymaker who likes to look beyond the beachfront and to delve into both history and culture. If this sounds like you, then Fira is a great base for this island adventure. Before moving too far afield, there are some local attractions you might want to kick off with.

  • Get a feel for the history that surrounds you with a visit to the Thira Prehistoric Museum. This museum, divided into four parts will show you in detail how life has changed over the ages in a city that dates back to the Late Neolithic period. Exhibitions are as diverse as the time periods they cover and include everything from plant fossils to plaster casts of household goods from the 17th century.
  • As Cathedrals go, the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral is one to remember. The whole of Fira was nearly destroyed in an earthquake in 1956 and the Cathedral was not spared from the carnage. She has been lovingly restored, however, and matches the rest of the town with her white arches and bell tower. Excellent views are afforded of both the caldera and the volcano of Santorini.
  • Test your fitness on the old donkey trail. Fira is built on the side of an ancient volcano and though the views are breath-taking, anywhere you want to go is downhill. The old donkey trail to the sea consists of a 587-step descent which today is still traversed by donkeys, though they now tend to carry tourists rather than goods. Don't worry, after the ascent, there is a cable car to carry you back again.
  • For something that is part museum, part art gallery, the Santozeum is well worth a visit. The building that houses it consists of a series of arcades that hug the cliffs. Here you will be delighted by old photos of some of the local ancient frescoes, combined with more modern works of art. Of course, there are yet more views of the caldera and, if you are lucky, you might be able to take in a film or festival while you are there.
  • Santorini is all about chilling and in Fira, this is something that is enticingly easy to do because it seems that every bar or restaurant is blessed with views that Hollywood producers dream of. Grab a table, a glass of local wine, and a bowl full of Greek olives, and simply indulge in watching the sunset across the caldera.

Transport options in Fira

  • Just nine kilometers from mainland Athens, Fira is well served by ferries as well as catamarans, so getting there is no problem.
  • Once on the island, transport becomes a little more tricky due to the sheer number of tourists and the small windy nature of the roads. There are regular bus services to all of the island’s other towns.
  • There are many of the car rental options you would expect to find, but you may also want to consider scooter rental.
  • Taxis are readily available and it is possible to hire a taxi for the day and have the driver take you to a number of different destinations and then wait while you explore. Be sure to negotiate the price in advance.

Luggage storage in Fira

This is a delightful island but its roads are narrow and steep so the last thing you are going to want to be doing is dragging large bags with you. Bounce luggage storage has thought of this, and they have paired up with local businesses so that you can store your bags easily and in complete confidence. It is not expensive and it affords you the chance to make the most of your visit carrying only what you need.

Activities and attractions near Fira

  • Fira to Oia hike: There are many hikes on Santorini, and that shouldn’t come as a surprise as the island offers so many superb viewing opportunities. This hike is one of the best and at just 10 kilometers, it affords you plenty of time to take in those views. It traverses the rim of the Caldera and few hikes can compete for such a constant array of panoramic views. Start early because it can get seriously hot out there.
  • Take a catamaran cruise: There is no shortage of companies that will offer you a cruise around this lovely island, and all that you need to decide is just what sort of a tour you prefer. Sunset tours are very popular, but there are others that specialize in snorkeling or gastronomic offshore meals.
  • The Byzantine Castle: The Byzantine Castle is a ruined fortress in the village of Oia. It was once used as a lookout point where locals could retreat to escape marauding enemies. Oia is a very popular place from which to enjoy sunset views across the caldera and of the Cathedral in Fira. It is quieter here than Fira, but equally quaint. If you want to catch that sunset from a good spot, get to the castle early.
