Myeongdong is located in Seoul, South Korea’s Jung district (referred to as Jung-gu in Korean). Records show that Myeongdong has existed in some form or another since the 1300s. During that time, Myeongdong was known as Myeongryebang and was a residential neighborhood in the Joseon Dynasty. Japan would later occupy the area and rename it Meijicho until South Korean gained its independence in 1946 and renamed the area Myeongdong.  

These days, Myeongdong has become an incredibly popular shopping district. Millions of visitors from around the world pour into Myeongdong each and every year. Because of this trend, Myeongdong has also become one of the expensive shopping centers on earth.
