About Tallinn Airport

Tallinn Airport, or the Lennart Meri Tallinn International Airport to give it its full title, is the airport which serves Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. Located in the far north of the country, and relatively small compared to airports of other European capital cities, it's still the biggest and busiest airport in the country. Tallinn's singular runway copes with over fifty thousand aircraft annually which are a combination of international and domestic cargo and passenger planes.

Tallinn Airport's terminal received its first flights in the early 1930s then underwent major renovations in 2008 to bring it up to date. From being almost an empty hangar building the terminal has now been expanded to a T-shape and has passenger lounges, check-in desks, and boarding bridges as well as hospitality facilities. External work which included the addition of taxiways has made the airport more efficient and doubled its capacity for cargo and passengers.

Expansion work won't be stopping at Tallinn Airport for some time to come and there are plans already in place for another terminal building and an extra runway. With these new amenities, the airport aims to accommodate several European economy airlines and up to a million more passengers a year.

Things to do around Tallinn Airport

Tallinn Airport is right on the outskirts of the city and super quick and easy to get to by public transport, so even if you only have a couple of hours before your flight takes off, you can make the most of it. Whether you enjoy viewing elaborate architecture, browsing contemporary art, wandering around museums or botanical gardens, or prefer to take time out in natural surroundings, it'll be time well spent in Tallinn.

  • Go medieval and take a stroll under the stone arches of the Katariina käik, an atmospheric and historic cobbled street lined with coffee shops and boutiques.
  • Take a selfie standing next to one of the impressive turreted towers of the 14th century Viru Gate at the entrance to Tallinn's historic center.
  • Get mind-boggled by the intricate architecture of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the Kadriorg Art Museum before going in to check out the iconography and paintings.
  • Visit the Lennusadam Maritime Museum to view the 16th-century relic of a sunken ship and the other exhibits there.
  • For a breath of fresh air wander around the Tallinn Botanical Gardens where the orderly flower beds are adorned with statues and sculptures.
  • Get creeped out in the Patarei Prison Museum by going into one of the cells and closing the door.
  • Climb up to the top of the Patkuli viewing platform in the Old Town to get a mega view of Tallinn, Lake Ulemiste, and the surrounding countryside.

Attractions and activities near Tallinn Airport

Jägala Joa: Around a thirty-minute drive inland from Tallinn Airport is one of the most scenic spots in northern Estonia. Near the rural village of Jägala Joa where the Jägala Jogi river winds its way across the landscape is the Jägala Juga. The stunning waterfall at eight meters high is the tallest cascade in the country and stretches over the fast-flowing river for a total distance of fifty meters. There are several viewing points from where you can see and photograph the falls, but the best spot is from on the Jägala Joa tamm, a concrete bridge spanning the river.

Aegna: Aegna is a three-kilometer-square island in Tallinn Bay renowned for its beaches and hiking trails. Catch the local ferry from Pirita Harbor or if you know how to sail, you can hire a boat to go over. Once there, set out to explore the island's rocky terrains by trekking the fifteen kilometers of trails where you'll come across the ruins of a military watchtower and a gun battery with underground tunnels hidden beneath it. The best sights though are of the Estonian mainland and Tallinn in the distance. If hiking isn't your thing you can pick up a bicycle for free and cycle around the island instead. Don't miss having a tent sauna under the trees before you go back to Tallinn.

Veskimetsa: Veskimetsa is a tiny hamlet to the west of Tallinn and where Tallinn Zoo is located. It's the only animal park in the entire country and houses almost fourteen thousand animals of over five hundred species. The zoo participates in major conservation programs for endangered animals like the snow leopard and black rhinoceros as well as the European mink which it breeds then releases to the wild. Just a few miles away from the zoo is Stroomi Beach, an expansive stretch of sand lining part of Tallinn Bay. It's an ideal spot for outdoor activities as well as relaxing on the beach when the chilly Estonian weather permits it.
