About Shinjuku

Shinjuku is one of Tokyo’s busiest and most interesting neighborhoods. This all-in-one area always has something to see and do, from shopping and dining to business and entertainment. Wandering its streets is like exploring a miniature version of Tokyo, complete with traditional yakitori stalls and more modern buildings like skyscrapers and luxury hotels. One of Shinjuku’s main draws is the nightlife, which will keep you out until the early hours of the morning.

Even if you’re not the type to stay up late, you’ll probably end up passing through Shinjuku at some point during your trip to Tokyo. Home to the Shinjuku Station and the Shinjuku Expressway bus terminal, also known as the bus terminal Busta Shinjuku, it’s a key location in the city’s public transit network. Nearby, you’ll also find the Tokyo Tourist Information Center which will help you become familiar with the neighborhood. While you’re here, take the time to stop and explore the area for yourself. Aside from bars and nightclubs, you’ll find plenty of hidden gems around the district.

Whether you’re spending some time in the area or are just passing through Shinjuku, luggage storage will come in handy throughout your trip. Take advantage of our left luggage storage service to easily store luggage while on the go.

Shinjuku city guide

Top things to do in Shinjuku

Although Shinjuku is just a small part of Tokyo, it really doesn’t feel that way when you’re actually here. There’s a surprising amount of things to see and do in the neighborhood, which is why it’s a good idea to plan activities before you arrive.

Museums in Shinjuku

When you’re looking to get to know a new city, the best place to start is its museums and landmarks. Shinjuku has a few museums of its own that are worth checking out; here are a few in the area or close by that we recommend.

Shinjuku Historical Museum

The Shinjuku Historical Museum is where you’ll find materials, artifacts, and items related to the past, present, and future of Shinjuku City. With exhibits covering periods from ancient times to modern day, it’s a must-see for all who visit the area. The museum also features a reading room that’s filled with knowledge, as well as an auditorium where you can go to watch lectures and events.

Shinjuku Historical Museum bag policy

Museums often have bag policies that don’t allow baggage and oversized items inside. This museum’s policy is unclear, but dragging heavy luggage around while you’re trying to enjoy a museum is never a good time. Don’t worry about going back and forth from the hotel; you can drop off unnecessary items at any of our convenient locations around Shinjuku.

Natsumi Soseki Memorial Museum

This museum is dedicated to Natsumi Soseki, the Japanese novelist. While visiting the museum, you’ll learn about Soseki’s life and character and catch a glimpse into his working life. You can visit the outdoor exhibition free of charge and step inside to see a replica of the place where he lived and worked for much of his life.

Natsumi Soseki Memorial Museum bag policy

We’re not sure if you can bring bags into this Shinjuku museum, but to be safe, we recommend leaving suitcases, backpacks, or oversized items somewhere safe during your visit. Simply make a booking appointment and stop by our nearest storage space to drop off your things.

Saeki Yuzo Atelier Museum

Step inside the atelier and workplace of Saeki Yuzo, a painter best known for his paintings of Paris streets. Throughout his career, he traveled to and stayed in Paris on several occasions, returning now and then to work from here. The museum is special since it’s the only place where he worked in Japan. Nearby, you’ll also find the Shinjuku CitySaeki Park.

Saeki Yuzo Atelier Museum bag policy

It’s not stated if customers are allowed to bring bags into this museum, but you don’t want to find out that you can’t enter with your things after you’ve arrived. Make your visit more enjoyable by stashing your belongings in a secure Bounce luggage storage location.

There’s a certain feeling you get when you step foot into a new museum with exhibits full of knowledge just waiting for you to discover. While you’re in the museums in Shinjuku, don’t let your bags slow you down. With plenty of locations all around the map, you can find a convenient storage space no matter where you are in the neighborhood.

Shopping in Shinjuku

Shopping is one of the things Shinjuku is best known for. Many of Tokyo’s best local shops are found in this neighborhood, making it a great place for a shopping spree.

Isetan

Isetan is a large scale department store that’s been around since 1886. It’s safe to say that this place has earned itself a permanent spot in the district, and it’s known to be one of the best shopping locations in the area. They stock a variety of high-end items, ranging from perfumes and accessories to casualwear and suits. Before you leave, be sure to recharge your energy at the food floor found in the basement; it’s often said to be one of the best in the entire city.

MyLord

For the best of Japanese fashion and streetwear, head straight to MyLord. This huge shopping destination is home to well-known brands and clothing subcultures that aren’t usually found in the country. After you’ve explored everything inside and bought yourself some cool new clothes, you can make your way to Mosaic Street. Here, you’ll find high-end boutiques and souvenir shops.

Sekaido

If you’re crafty or interested in art, Sekaido will be like paradise to you. This art supply and stationery store has several floors filled with art tools, supplies, and resources to help you with all of your future artistic endeavors. With five floors filled with every paintbrush, marker, paper, and canvas you can think of, you’ll definitely be able to find what you need here.

Feel free to shop til you drop in Shinjuku. Treat yourself to some new clothes, tech, art supplies or more, and stop by one of our nearby partners to drop off your shopping bags when you’re done.

Restaurants in Shinjuku

After a full day of sightseeing and shopping, it’s about time to sit down and relax with a meal. There are lots of great restaurants to choose from in the area, why not stop by one of these eateries before getting back into the activities and attractions in Shinjuku?

Tsukemen Gonokami Seisakusho

Tsukeme, also known as dipping ramen, is a common treat in Japan, and this restaurant is one of the best places to get it. You can take your pick from different flavors and varieties, like shrimp tsukemen, ebi miso tsukemen, or ebi tomato tsukemen, to name a few. You can also take your pick of toppings with choices like chashu pork, mozzarella cheese, basil sauce, and ramen egg. The restaurant is small, with a limited number of seats. There’s usually a line out the door to order, so come in advance.

Shinjuku Kappo NAKAJIMA

With the full meals served at Shinjuku Kappo NAKAJIMA, you’ll never leave this restaurant hungry. They serve both dinner and lunch courses with fantastic options for both, and inside the restaurant is warm, clean, and welcoming. The lunch meals come with servings of rice, pickles, miso soup and tea, as well as your pick of sardine dish. You can have them simmered in shoyu stock, deep fried and crispy, served as sashimi with ginger and sesame, or in a casserole-type dish topped with onions and egg.

Shin

Shin is a small restaurant with very few seats. You won’t get a full sit down meal with service here, but what you will get is delicious food that’s cooked to perfection. There’s sometimes a long wait to get your food but it’s more than worth it, as the care and expertise that goes into their freshly made noodles is what makes them so good. You’ll have several options but we recommend the carbonara udon which includes noodles topped with grated cheese, bacon tempura, and a soft-boiled egg. If you have room, order a serving of deep-fried tofu to go with it.

Nothing beats sitting down for a delicious, freshly cooked meal after spending the entire day wandering around the neighborhood. Travelers should be sure to drop off their bags at one of our convenient locations before going out to eat, especially since many of the local restaurants are small.

Store your bags as you explore Shinjuku

Despite being just a part of Tokyo, the district of Shinjuku has lots to offer curious travelers. As you make your way around the neighborhood, stopping by all of the museums, shops, and restaurants that we’ve mentioned along the way, keep your things stored at one of our partner locations.
