NYC Marathon 2024
The 2024 NYC Marathon is almost here, bringing with it the contagious energy of over 50,000 runners conquering the rolling hills of New York City.
The NYC Marathon is not just one of the largest marathons in the world, attracting over 50,000 participants and international runners from over 100 countries. It also draws more than 2 million spectators and the interest in this race keeps on growing each year!
The NYC Marathon was first organized in 1970 by the New York Road Runners (NYRR), initially a local running club. Since then, NYRR has grown into an organization dedicated to inspiring people to run and make it to the finish line. Held annually since its inception, the marathon is now sponsored by TCS, an Indian multinational technology company specializing in IT services and consulting. As a result, the event's official name is the TCS New York City Marathon.
Additionally, the NYC Marathon is also a significant charity fundraising event. Each year, participants run to raise funds for various causes, adding a special meaning to their efforts. Since 2006, the marathon has raised over $520 million! Among its official charity partners are NYRR, Team for Kids, the American Cancer Society, and other impactful organizations.
The race day is on November 3rd, with the start at 8 AM. The course is 26.2 miles long.
What to Expect When Attending NYC Marathon 2024
The runners will kick off from Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island, crossing two bridges. Then, they'll continue descending into Brooklyn and later into Queens. After crossing Queensboro Bridge, they will find themselves in Manhattan. The race heads into the Bronx and returns to Manhattan via the Madison Avenue Bridge. The finishing line at 67th Street is reached after the participants run along Fifth Avenue and into Central Park, where the final challenge awaits them - rolling hills!
The New York City Marathon is not an easy or fast race. Due to many areas with hills and inclined bridges, runners can't hold a steady pace. Winds that blow through all five boroughs, typical for that part of the year, will surely slow them down a bit.
There are many prime locations from which the spectators can observe the race and cheer. Bridges are one of them, but the access to them will be limited. Some of the spots, like Long Stretch in Brooklyn, are known for their festival-like atmosphere as they tend to gather huge crowds.
The weather will be in favor of runners. It’s expected that November 3rd will be a mild day with clear skies and temperatures ranging between 50°F (10°C) and 58°F (14°C).
If you’re coming there to watch, dress in comfortable, layered clothes that can keep you warm and enjoy this unique and thorny race.
Entry
Spectators can watch the event for free!
The 2024 TCS New York City Marathon application period for runners ended on March 21st, 2024.
The prize money for the first ten runners who finish the race ranges from 2,000 $ to 100,000 $ for the 1st place.
The fundraising minimum for guaranteed entry runners participating as part of a charity team in the NYC Marathon can vary widely depending on the charity. Typically, it ranges from around $2,500 to $5,000 or more.
Security Protocols
NYRR members want you to know that it's their priority to ensure both runners' and spectators' safety. That's why these security protocols will be included:
- Security personnel and NYPD will be present to keep the environment safe.
- All bags entering the venue and events will be inspected.
- It’s recommended that you don’t bring any bags at all.
- If you have to bring a bag, you are advised to bring a small purse.
