Faro is the southernmost and most populated city in the Algarve region of Portugal. It was first settled in the 4th century BC and quickly became a strategic port and trade center of the Iberian Peninsula. Originally called Ossonoba, Faro was formerly ruled by the Romans, Byzantines, and Visigoths before the Moors gained control in the 8th century.
During Moorish rule, defensive walls were built to protect the important settlement from invaders. After the Moors ruled for hundreds of years, the Crusades toppled Faro by the mid-13th century. The historic center (Cidade Velha) remains engulfed by the medieval fortifications and gives you insight into Faro’s development. With its developed port and lucrative salt trade, Faro retained its value within the Portuguese Kingdom.
Wander the city’s cobblestone streets to discover medieval churches, beautiful palaces, and charming cafes. Taste delicious Algarvian cuisine at riverfront restaurants and visit the nearby Parque Natural da Ria Formosa to spot wildlife. The saltwater lagoons, dunes, and marshes connect Faro to a gorgeous coastline that attracts beachgoers around Europe.
Outside of its enchanting historic center, Faro boasts lively plazas and an eclectic shopping scene filled with pedestrianized streets. Faro is well-connected to other Portuguese cities and European destinations thanks to its international airport and railway station. Millions of passengers each year travel through the Algarve region, and Faro retains a unique charm that separates it from beach resort towns.

Ria Formosa: The saltwater lagoons of Ria Formosa provide migratory birds and marine life a sanctuary outside Faro. For centuries, the tranquil waterways have hosted traditional fishing communities and strengthened the local economy. The area is designated a national park and preserves 170 km² to support the ecosystem.
There are ferries, boat tours, and island-hopping excursions that let tourists and locals enjoy the park’s natural beauty. Watch hundreds of birds, unwind on pristine beaches, and admire the views of Faro from the sea inlets. Once your vessel departs Faro, sail to isolated parts of the region such as Deserted Island and Ilha da Culatra Island.
You’ll have the opportunity to reach the southernmost point of Portugal and learn about seafood farms that power the economy. Bring your snorkel for the ride and dive into the turquoise waters to find lots of seahorses.
Faro Cathedral: Constructed in the 13th century, Faro Cathedral is among the city’s most revered churches in the historic center. Also known as the “Sé,” the cathedral was originally built atop the ruins of Roman, Visigoth, and Moorish religious sites.
The cathedral’s story is defined by tragedy and perseverance since it has been destroyed twice. Its first catastrophe came during an English attack in the late 16th century, and the other was the horrific earthquake of 1755. As a result, the cathedral now features a mixture of Baroque, Gothic, and Renaissance styles.
The historic cathedral has held the seat of the Diocese of Faro since the mid-16th century and it’s regarded as a national monument of Portugal. A small museum holds paintings, statues, and other religious items, while gilded wood carvings adorn the interior.
Castle of Silves: The Castle of Silves is among the earliest fortifications in Faro and a well-preserved Moorish castle. It’s believed that the Romans developed the area around 200 BC, but the grounds transformed into a mighty bastion during Moorish rule. Excavations of the castle revealed medieval ruins from the Moors and Crusaders that conquered the castle.
The castle walls underwent significant restoration in the 20th century, and visitors will notice the detailed features of the fortress. Tickets onto the castle grounds also give you access to the on-site archaeological museum. From the hilltop, you get a sense of what it was like guarding Faro during the Middle Ages. After wandering the castle and admiring the views, you can visit the café for a tasty brew and lunch.
