About Buchanan Station

In 1977, three main Glasgow bus station, Killermont Street, Dundas Street and Renfrew Street, had become so crowded that they were no longer suited for purpose. This resulted in the decision to build the Buchanan bus station and amalgamate the other three.

Today, Buchanan bus station is the largest bus station in the whole of Scotland with over 1700 departures per day. The terminus services local city buses and long-distance buses to the rest of Scotland, as well as buses from the rest of the UK and Europe.

What to do in and around Buchanan Bus Station

Glasgow is a city that has seen its ups and downs. It was made hugely wealthy due to shipbuilding, the textile and steel industries, and its position as a trade hub. Deindustrialization in the 1960s saw mass unemployment and social decline. Since the 1980s, however, there has been a renaissance and today Glasgow is the fifth safest city in Europe.

  • Take an architectural stroll. This city is rich in Victorian architecture as it was so wealthy during that period, and there are few better ways to discover these masterpieces than on foot. (Another reason to stow those big bags). The Cathedral is the finest example of medieval architecture in Scotland, and while there, take a wander through the Necropolis. This cemetery is teeming with statues and sculptures and underlaid with a wealth of interesting stories.
  • Admire the great street art on a guided tour. Street art often says a lot about a place and offers insights into both the artists and the characters being portrayed. Good street art can really open a window into local passions and emotions, and Glasgow has some of the best.
  • Experience some of the more offbeat places by heading to Ashton Lane in the west of the city. Here you will find trendy restaurants, quirky boutiques, and unusual bars. Very popular with locals, this area will give you a look at this city from a different perspective.
  • Go green. Glasgow has more than ninety parks making it one of the greenest cities in Britain. They all have their own character and so you are free to seek out those that most suit you, but one to consider is Pollock County Park. Here things tend to be a little wild and if you have kids with you, they might enjoy watching the Highland cows grazing.
  • Catch an overview by riding the city tour bus. This hop-on, hop-off bus stops at twenty-one different destinations and offers informative commentary along the way. It’s a good way to gain a deeper understanding of what this city has to offer before deciding what most demands further investigation.

Glaswegians are outgoing friendly people and it is highly likely that you will want to spend longer here than you had expected you would. These are some of the must-see sites.

Gallery of Modern Art: This fabulous gallery is housed in a building built in 1778 by a rich tobacco merchant, and is the most visited art gallery in Scotland. They change exhibits regularly and entry is free. Standing outside the gallery is a statue of Wellington seated on a horse. An almost nightly prank is to place a traffic cone on Wellington's head and this has become something of a tourist drawcard in itself.

Tennent’s Brewery Tour: If you are unfamiliar with this, one of Scotland’s favorite beers, you won't be after spending any time in Glasgow. Their red 'T' logo is widely spread across the city. The brewery offers tours of their facility and then throw in a generous tasting option afterwards.
