About Flinders Street Station

Located at the corner of Flinders Street and Swanston Street in Melbourne, Flinders Street Station is a major hub and sees millions of visitors each year. This location is one of the main stations for the metropolitan railway system as well as cross-country trains. The iconic building was built in 1854 and named Melbourne Terminus; it has been listed as a Victorian Heritage Building. The Flinders Street Station was the very first rail station opened in any city in Australia. The clocks at the station were put in place during the 1860s to display the departure times and are still in use today. Originally, the clocks were manual, and an employee had to set them several times a day. Now, the clocks have been converted to update automatically from the station offices.

Above the terminals is a ballroom that has long since been abandoned. The hall hosted dance classes, concerts, and dance competitions. In the 50s and 60s, dances were held at the ballroom for Allied servicemen, and it became one of the most popular of its kind in Melbourne. The ballroom closed in 1983. A gymnasium is located next door, and it, too, has been shuttered since the early 1980s. The rooftop running track is still open, and it is not an unusual sight to see people walking or running along the 440-yard track.

Fun Fact: The Flinders Street Station is considered to be haunted. There have been numerous sightings of a ghost that some call George. Many visitors claim to have seen George standing on platform 10, staring out at the Yarra River and holding fishing gear. He then vanishes into thin air. It is widely speculated that George is really the ghost of Ernest Leahy, who perished in the Yarra River in October of 1902 after being involved in a boating accident while fishing.
