About Newcastle

Perched upon the River Tyne is the metropolitan city of Newcastle. Located in the far northeast of England, Newcastle is famed for its industrial history and Geordie culture. If you're planning to visit Newcastle from abroad, the city is home to Newcastle International Airport, which offers flights to destinations around the world, including Dubai, Geneva, and Amsterdam.

Romans initially founded Newcastle in the 2nd century as Pons Aelius, a settlement built to protect Hadrian's Wall. Following the Roman departure of Britain in the early 5th century, Pons Aelius was captured by the Kingdom of Northumbria, who renamed the city Monkchester. It wasn't until Norman rule in the 11th century that it eventually got the name Newcastle. For the following centuries, Newcastle was an important stronghold against Scottish invasions.

By the 18th and 19th century, Newcastle was one of the largest cities in Britain. Thanks to its industrial power and position along the River Tyne, Newcastle became one of the most important cities of the Industrial Revolution. While its power has waned somewhat in recent history, Newcastle is still one of the ten largest cities in the UK and boasts a thriving retail and tourism industry.

  • Beamish Museum: Located just south of Newcastle near the town of Stanley is the Beamish Museum. The Beamish Museum is like taking a step back in time —it's an open-air living museum that aims to preserve what life was like in the northeast during the Industrial Revolution.
The museum covers over 350 acres, making it one of Britain's largest and most realistic living museums. While ambling around Beamish, ensure you drop in one the 1940's farms, and see what it was like to cook with rations during World War II. Alternatively, head to the 1820's town of Pockerley and take a ride on the steam train, or hike through the surrounding Georgian landscape. Feeling peckish during your visit? Head to one of the many shops and stalls dotted across the museum, which offer a wide variety of classic 1900's refreshments and snacks. You won't want to lug your bags around this vast living museum, so drop by a Newcastle luggage storage service first.

This ancient fortification is located in the same spot as the original castle, which gave Newcastle its name. The current fort dates back to the 11th century and was constructed under the rule of King Henry II.

You can also learn about the area's Roman past and the construction of Hadrian's Wall at special permanent displays.

First opened in 2002, the Gateshead Millennium Bridge spans the River Tyne, connecting Newcastle and Gateshead.
