Since the 13th century, Mallorca has been mainly under the control of Spain.

Modern-day Palma offers holidaymakers beautiful architecture, Spanish culture, delicious cuisine, and endless sunshine. It’s a wonderful place to go to relax, and also to sightsee. To learn everything there is to do in Palma, take a look at the attractions below.

Top things to do in Palma

Activities and attractions in Palma

The Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma

The Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma is one of Palma's most famous historical sights. Also known as La Seu, construction on this Gothic-style Roman Catholic cathedral started in the 13th century and took a staggering 300 years to complete. At nearly 400 feet long and over 140 feet tall, it’s one of the largest Gothic-style cathedrals in the world.

At the start of the 20th century, famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí helped renovate the cathedral's interior. For a small fee, visitors can view the inside of the cathedral and admire its stained glass windows, lavish architecture, and religious paintings.

Cuevas del Drach

Located an hour across the island near the town of Porto Cristo is the entranceway to one of Mallorca's breathtaking cave systems. Cueva del Drach consists of four immense caves complete with underground lakes and stunning rock formations. The best way to explore the caves is on an underground boat tour.

This tour will take you past the "Snowcapped Mountains," a fantastic formation of minerals and stalactites, and Lake Martel, one of the largest underground lakes in the world. You can even enjoy a classical music concert within the caves for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Cuevas del Drach bag policy

You can’t bring heavy bags on the boat with you, and oversized items and suitcases are prohibited inside the caves. Simply head to our left luggage service before traveling to Porto Cristo. Store your luggage for the entire day while you’re out exploring.

Castell de Bellver

See how Palma's royalty lived at Castell de Bellver. Castell de Bellver was constructed in the 14th century and was the home of King James II of Mallorca. As well as being home to royalty, Castell de Bellver was used as a prison during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Nowadays, the castle is a significant tourist attraction and serves as a history museum. The museum plays host to several important permanent exhibits relating to the history of Mallorca. Some of the museum's most intriguing artifacts include Roman pottery dating back over 2,000 years, and Arabian ceramics dating back over 1,000 years. The castle also offers gorgeous panoramas of Palma, so make sure to take in the sights during your visit.

Castell de Bellver bag policy

There’s no clear bag policy for the Castell de Bellver, but museums often don’t allow suitcases or large backpacks in the exhibit spaces. This is where our great service comes in. For the same affordable price per bag, you can store luggage of any size. Book luggage storage with us in advance so you won’t have to wait in long lines, an experience you may encounter at luggage lockers.

Palma Aquarium

Looking for an activity the whole family will enjoy? Consider the Palma Aquarium. Palma Aquarium features over 700 different species of aquatic animals from around the globe. It also holds the record for the biggest collection of live coral on the continent.

During your visit to the aquarium, you'll see a huge variety of tropical fish, such as anthias, boxfish, and clownfish. Anybody feeling brave can book to swim with sharks, including massive sand tiger sharks and sandbar sharks.

Palma Aquarium bag policy

Although we’re not sure if you can bring bags into the aquarium, you’ll definitely have to stow your suitcases if you go swimming with the sharks. Our luggage storage services can take away your baggage worries for a few hours as you see all of the incredible sea creatures.

Fundació Miró Mallorca

Learn about local culture at the Fundació Miró Mallorca. This art museum is within Joan Miró's old house and contains many works by this world-famous painter. The exhibit in the main building houses an impressive collection of close to 6,000 works. Among them are paintings and sculptures, with a library and a sculpture garden to explore.

You’ll have to store any backpacks, umbrellas, or luggage safely before entering the museum since items that measure over 30 x 30 cm aren’t allowed inside. Keep us in mind any time that you need to stow luggage in Palma de Mallorca.

Arab Baths

Discover Palma's Muslim past at the Arab Baths. These 10th-century baths are one of the few remaining structures from the Moorish city of Medina Mayurqa and also feature an ornate, vibrant flower garden.

Beach

Bask in endless sunshine at one of Mallorca's white sandy beaches. Have a seaside cocktail at Cala Major Beach, or make a splash at Can Pere Antoni.

Shopping in Palma

Passeig des Born

Browse the boutiques along Passeig des Born. This historic street is home to many of Palma's best stores, including Louis Vuitton, Hugo Boss, and Zara. The road is pedestrianized so you can walk around and window shop without having to look out for cars.

Avenida Jaime III

As the main shopping street in the area, this is the best place to go to see everything that Palma de Mallorca offers. From designer boutiques to local shops selling high-street brand names, Avenida Jaime III is a must for fashion lovers. You can take your shopping spree even further to include Carrer de la Unio, which is an extension of the street.

La Rambla

La Rambla is a pedestrian-only street that’s lovely to stroll down. It’s a beautiful spot lined with trees and situated on an old riverbed called La Riera. Lining the road are cute chocolate shops, stalls selling fresh flowers, and independent boutiques.

Top restaurants in Palma

Adrian Quetglas Restaurant

Adrian Quetglas is a chef born in Buenos Aires and he has one of the best restaurants in the city. With an affordably priced lunch menu and delicious supper options, it’s always a nice spot to go for a meal. When you eat here, you can choose between a 5-step or 7-step tasting, with dishes like potato omelette with squid and seaweed, suckling beef marinated in seaweed with pickled peaches and Oloroso juice, and much more. Wine pairings are also offered.

Vandal Palma

Vandal Palma is often busy so don’t expect a quiet meal, but its food and drinks make it all more than worth it. They’re said to have a welcoming atmosphere and some of the city’s best and most inventive cocktails, as well as very creative dishes with expert wine pairings. Not sure what to order? Customers rave about the crispy tuna belly and foie gras starter, and the chicken stroganoff is also great.

Restaurant Urba

We always recommend eating at Restaurant Urba, especially if you’re visiting between May and October when their rooftop terrace is available. You can dine in style while overlooking an infinity pool and fabulous views of the city. Try the spinach croquettes, vegetable samosas or wagyu ham.

Transit options in Palma

Train

There are train stations that span between the center of Palma and the outskirts of Mallorca, and although they won’t really come in handy for traveling to tourist landmarks you can use them to reach other areas. Want to take a day trip to Soller? From the train station, you’ll get there in about an hour and tickets can cost as low as €9.00.

Metro

Although Palma has the smallest metro system in Spain, it can still be advantageous for tourists, especially when used in connection with the buses. You can buy a ticket for €1.80.

Bus

The local EMT bus service has an extensive network of routes that cover the area of the city. Buses are definitely useful when you’re out and about since they’re convenient and affordable. Bus tickets cost just €2.00.

Taxi Ranks

As with most cities, taxis can be useful for getting around as you enjoy Palma de Mallorca. You’ll find them near transportation hubs. They’re more expensive than other means of transit, but make up for it with convenience. A taxi ride from the city center to the airport is usually priced at around €25.00.
