6 hour layover in Dublin

On a short layover, you’ll need to be conscious of the time. Once you’ve gotten past customs and found a suitcase storage in Dublin, you may only have an hour or two in the city itself.

If you take the airport bus into town, you’ll get off at the Upper O’Connell Street bus stop. As luck would have it, this stop is right outside the General Post Office. This impressive building remains a working post office to this day, but it’s also the site where Irish independence was proclaimed during the Easter Rising of 1916. You can still see bullet holes in the façade of the building from the battle that raged between British forces and Irish volunteers, and an on-site Museum will explain the story of the uprising and its importance in the struggle for Irish independence. It also has a café so you can grab a bite to eat. Expect to spend between an hour to two hours at this fascinating attraction.

  • Take the airport bus to Upper O’Connell Street.
  • Visit the General Post Office for a glimpse into a fascinating period of Irish history.
