About Monastiraki Station

But it's not just for tourists. Athenians use the station every day to get around the city, making it an extremely busy part of town.

The name Monastiraki means 'little monastery', and the station takes its name from the tiny church that sits in nearby Monastiraki square. The station is a connection point for lines 1 and 3 of the Athens subway system, which makes it easy to reach for many parts of the city.

Monastiraki station is close to many of Athens' most popular monuments, but it also sits in a neighborhood that is well worth exploring by itself. Along with nearby Syntagma square, this is one of Athens' most lively and vibrant areas — and that's saying quite a lot.

As tempting as it is to head straight for the ruins of ancient Athens, spend a little time exploring the area around the station. There’s plenty here to keep you occupied.

  • Explore Greek culture at the Tzisdarakis Mosque and Museum of Folk Art. Greece was once ruled by the Muslim Ottoman Empire, and still has a high population of Muslims to this day. The mosque is witness to that history and also celebrates the folk art of Greece, along with offering a quiet place to escape the noise of the city outside.
  • See the artifacts of ancient Greece at the Stoa of Attalos. This former covered market is now a museum devoted to the artifacts uncovered in the excavation of the Agora, the Parthenon, and Athen's other impressive monuments.
