About Bilbao

Bilbao may often find itself in the shadows of Barcelona and Madrid, but this Spanish city in the North has so much to offer. Known for its culture and historical architecture, you really can’t go wrong in Bilbao. Any time of year is a good time to visit Bilbao.

Another huge part of the Bilbaoan culture is the incredible food tradition that has sprung up in the area. If you’re a serious foodie, you can find it all in Bilbao. With over 40 Michelin-starred restaurants (more than anywhere else in Europe) and iconic Basque-style tapas, called pintxos, found on every street corner, your tastebuds will be in heaven.

Architecture, as mentioned, is another massive aspect of Bilbao culture. From interesting bridges to modern city buildings, there are some incredible projects to see in the area. Zubizuri (or “white bridge”) is the perfect selfie companion, and the Calatrava Bridge is a footbridge just begging to be crossed. You’ll also see La Salve, the “red bridge”, when you visit the Guggenheim, as it’s right in front of the museum.

We make it easy to get around Bilbao and check off all the items on your must-see list, including the iconic red bridge. Before starting your adventure, download the Bounce app and search luggage storage Bilbao. Book in advance to drop off your luggage at a convenient baggage storage location and navigate the city with ease.

If you need a few pointers, here are the top spots to check out in Bilbao:

Activities and attractions in Bilbao

Once your luggage is safely stored and you’re no longer tied to your stuff, you’ll be ready to experience Bilbao in all its glory.

Artxanda Funicular

Architecture is a huge part of the Bilbao experience, and crossing a few of the iconic bridges like Zubizuri, Calatrava Bridge, and La Salve will be worth it. However, one of the best ways to experience the architecture and landscape of Bilbao is by taking the Artxanda Funicular to the top of the Artxanda mountain. Not only will you bask in the amazing views from the top, but the ride is just as enjoyable. It’s a must-do activity with the kids.

Guggenheim Museum Bilbao

As a cultural hub, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao has helped curate a strong interest in art and history. It was first inaugurated in 1997 by the King of Spain, Juan Carlos I, and had 250 contemporary artworks on display. The museum has become quite popular and has hosted over 20 million guests since then. Not bad for a small Spanish town.

Guggenheim Museum Bilbao bag policy

Guests are not allowed to enter the exhibition space of the Guggenheim Museum with umbrellas that don’t fold or bags that are over 35cm x 35cm in size. There are baggage storage lockers, but they can only accommodate small items. If you’re carrying large suitcases, strollers, or sports equipment, use our Bilbao luggage storage service. We don’t have any size limit on the bags we can store, so find a convenient location near you.

Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao

The Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao, or Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao, is another must-see place for art enthusiasts. The building is inside the beautiful Dona Casilda Iturrizar Park, so you can enjoy a peaceful stroll before or after exploring the exhibits. Inside the museum, there are sculptures, paintings and other artworks that are not only beautiful but also thought-provoking.

Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao bag policy

This museum has similar rules to the one mentioned above; they ask that you check any helmets, baggage, instruments, toys, umbrellas, backpacks, and sports equipment. They have a left luggage office on site to use as long as space is available. We have plenty of luggage storage locations in the area, and unlike luggage lockers, we always have room. Create your booking online when you store luggage with us, and avoid waiting in long lines.

Plaza Nueva

Start your day in Plaza Nueva, admiring the stunning architecture of this public square. On Sundays it’s the site of a bustling market, or if you need to send a quick email you can take advantage of the free wifi throughout.

Vizcaya Bridge

Check out Vizcaya Bridge, the world’s first transporter bridge, built in 1893. It’s used to bring items across the Nervion River and connects two towns: Las Arenas of Spain’s Biscay province and Portugalete.

Shopping in Bilbao

Zubiarte Merkataritza-Zentroa

Zubiarte is a shopping center designed by the architect Robert Stern. It comprises several buildings connected by stairways and gangways made to mimic streets. The mall is home to more than 75 shops selling everything from perfume and accessories to sporting wear and fashionable clothes. There’s also a supermarket, 8 cinemas, and more than enough restaurants to keep you fed during your shopping spree.

Casco Viejo

Casco Viejo is a neighborhood in Bilbao’s Old Town, and it also happens to be one of the best places to go shopping in the city. Nearly every street in the area is pedestrianized and lined with shops, cafes, bakeries, and souvenir stores. You’ll find plenty of places to do some retail therapy just wandering about, or you can check out the Mercado de la Ribera, a market selling fresh fish, meats, fruits, vegetables, and flowers.

Gran Via

Located in The Ensanche, a chic cosmopolitan district in Bilbao, is Gran Via. It’s the main retail street in the city with lots of unique stores and boutiques. You should be able to find everything you’re looking for here, so it’s a good spot to start your shopping journey if you just want to browse.

Restaurante Azurmendi

Splurge on fine dining at Azurmendi, a contemporary establishment on a hilltop with great views of the surrounding landscape. Restaurante Mina

Many people travel to Bilbao to experience its world-class fine dining and while in the city, it’s recommended if you’re ready to splurge on a fancy dinner. Bar Bacaicoa is worth the visit for both the food and drinks. They serve some of the best pintxos in the city, with different tastes like tuna, griddled mushrooms, and flamed cooked chorizo. Order a bottle of wine or another drink to go with it. The bar itself is simple, with a couple of tables and chairs both in and just outside of the eatery.
