About Florence airport

Florence airport, also known as Peretola, is an international airport to the northwest of the city of Florence. Although Florence is an extremely popular tourist destination, the airport is on the smaller side. It is not even the busiest airport in the region of Tuscany, being beaten in that regard by Pisa International Airport. Still, Florence receives just under three million visitors a year, so it is still an important regional hub.

The airport started life as a simple field where aircraft took off more or less at random. However, during the Second World War, the airport was redeveloped to provide a base for military planes. After the war ended, the airport switched to handling passenger flights, and with the growing popularity of air travel, the airport steadily grew.

The airport connects Florence to a number of destinations throughout Europe, making it an international airport. It has become a base of operations for low-cost airline Veuling and is also used by other budget airlines. In 1990, the airport was renamed after famed Florentine explorer Amerigo Vespucci, who also gave his name to the continents of North and South America.

Things to do near Florence airport

Florence airport lies around six miles from the center of the city itself, meaning it's not especially close to some of Florence's more famous attractions. However, it's not a long or difficult journey to reach the city from the airport and start exploring everything there is to do in this Renaissance marvel. And, this being Italy, you won't have to go far from the airport to find something worth doing.

  • Get prehistoric at an ancient tomb. Just to the north of the airport, the Etruscan tomb of La Montagnola is a relic of a vanished world. This impressive site dates back to the 7th century BC and was built before the Roman conquest of Italy brought about the end of the Etruscan civilization.
  • Learn about the lives of Florence's ruling family at the Palazzo Medici. Also known as the Riccardi Palace, this impressive building was built for the powerful banking family in 1484. It is still the City Hall of Florence, but its extensive art collection is open for the public to view.
  • Shop like a local at Florence’s central market. The Mercato Centrale is located in a 19th-century market hall and offers products from around the Tuscany region. As well as being a place for great food, the market hosts frequent art exhibitions and is home to numerous cafes.
  • Marvel at the unique collection of weapons at the Stibbert Museum. Florence is full of world-class museums and art galleries. If you're looking for something a little different, head to this museum close to the airport to see the personal collection of 19th-century businessman Frederick Stibbert. Stibbert’s collection of weapons and armor from around the world makes a great place to bring the kids.
