About Citygate

The Citygate Outlets, situated in Tung Chung on Lantau Island, Hong Kong, is a popular place to be for its shopping, entertainment, and dining. This mixed-use development isn't very old. Citygate's development dates back to the late 1990s, strategically timed to coincide with the opening of the Hong Kong International Airport in 1998.

This proximity to the airport was integral to its conceptualization, intending to serve the influx of tourists and the local population with a comprehensive outlet shopping and leisure experience. The complex was part of the broader Tung Chung New Town development project, aimed at expanding residential and commercial infrastructure on Lantau Island. Over the years, Citygate has undergone several renovations and expansions to accommodate the growing demands of its visitors, evolving from a simple shopping center to a comprehensive lifestyle hub.

Citygate's architecture is a blend of modern design principles and functional aesthetics, featuring a contemporary style that stands out in the Tung Chung landscape. The complex comprises a shopping mall, office towers, and a hotel. Its exterior is marked by the use of glass and steel, creating a sleek and futuristic appearance. The interior spaces are meticulously planned to enhance the shopping experience, with open spaces, natural lighting, and easy navigation through its multiple levels.

Citygate's location in Tung Chung places it near several of Hong Kong's key attractions. It is a gateway to Lantau Island's natural and cultural sites, including the Ngong Ping 360 cable car, leading to the Tian Tan Buddha and Po Lin Monastery. Also, since it's near the airport, it's super-easy to pop in here for a few hours (or the whole day). Citygate is adjacent to the Tung Chung MTR station, providing easy access to other parts of Hong Kong.

How to get to Citygate

You're super lucky if you arrive in Hong Kong via the International Airport. Citygate couldn't be much closer. It's also not that hard to get into the city center from here.

From the airport, it's less than a 10-minute drive to the outlets. You can also grab the S56 bus near Tung Chung Station and be at the airport's Terminal 1 in about 20 minutes.

From the main Hong King Station, getting to Citygate on the train is a breeze. You can take the Tung Chung Line for seven stops and arrive at the mall in roughly 35 minutes. The drive will take you about the same amount of time, so we recommend the train to avoid traffic and parking.

Things to do near Citygate

Big Buddha

One of the most visited attractions near Citygate is the massive bronze statue, also called Tian Tan Buddha. Completed in 1993, it towers above the city as a symbol of peace and Buddhism. Perched atop 268 steps, the statue is 34 meters high and faces north towards mainland China. It's one of the largest seated Buddha statues in the world and is definitely a serene retreat from the city's hustle and bustle, provided there aren't too many tourists there already.

Another highlight of a trip to see the statue is the chance to explore Po Lin Monastery. Founded in 1906 by three monks from Jiangsu, it has evolved from a small temple to a sprawling monastery complex. The site features ornate architectural designs, with intricate carvings and statues that embody Buddhist values. The vegetarian restaurant here is famous for its traditional Buddhist cuisine, so arrive hungry!

How to get to the Big Buddha

You can drive to this attraction, but it's not the ideal way to travel. You're better off walking about five minutes from the outlets to the Ngong Ping Cable Car and getting to the statue this way. The journey will take about 45 minutes all in, and the cable car ride is 25 minutes of that.

Fu Tung Market

Fu Tung Wet Market is an indoor market, situated within the Fu Tung Plaza, and is a vital source of fresh produce, meats, seafood, and household goods for local residents. Known for its vibrant atmosphere and diverse offerings, the market caters to the daily needs of the community. If you're looking to learn a little about the daily lives of locals, this is a fun place to do it. Plus, you can pick up lunch supplies while you're here or go with something ready-made from the market's enviable international selection. There's everything from tacos to Korean bento boxes to Taiwanese beef noodles.

How to get to Fu Tung Market

Getting here couldn't be easier. The walk from Citygate Outlets will only take five minutes or less, depending on where you start from in the mall.

Walk by the water

The Tung Chung waterfront is a great place to get in some steps outside the confines of a mall. The waterfront is dotted with art installations, lush green spaces like the rain garden, and recreational areas, so there should be something that appeals to most here. And that's not even mentioning the lovely views over the South China Sea and the area's mountains. From here, you can also see the striking Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, a marvel of modern engineering stretching across the Pearl River Delta. The Tung Chung Fort, a historical site, adds a touch of history to the scenic walk. The area is a perfect blend of natural beauty, leisure, and culture when you need to get outside for a bit.

How to get to Tung Chung waterfront

You have a choice with this one. The walk here should take about 20 minutes. If that feels a little long, head to the S56 bus again at Tung Chung Station. On the bus, you'll cut your travel time in half.
