About the terminal

When international travelers make it to Hong Kong, they tend to do it up with a lengthy stay filled with a few day trips. Easily the most common day trip from Hong Kong would be to Macau, which is just a short ferry ride away. With a blend of Portuguese and Chinese cultures dating back centuries, Macau is one of the most fascinating corners of the globe. If you’re a high roller, it gets even better as Macau is famous for its glitzy casinos

The most common way to get to Macau would be by ferry, although many of the wealthiest visitors will get here by helicopter. While soaring across the sea is a delight, with so many ferries running throughout the hour, you’re better off taking the ferry from the well-connected Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal. You’ll also hear it referred to as “Macau Ferry Terminal,”  “Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Pier” or even the “Shun Tak Heliport,” as it’s also a heliport.

Situated on the north side of Hong Kong Island in Sheung Wan, this transit station is near the business district and some of the top attractions. It’s part of the Shun Tak Centre complex, which is one of Hong Kong’s primary transportation hubs along with retail and other offerings. The whole complex is well-placed for sightseeing around Hong Kong Island.

Does the Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal have luggage lockers?

Unfortunately, there are no Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal luggage storage options onsite, but you’ll be able to leave your bags in either Hong Kong before you depart or at a secure location in Macau. Using a luggage storage service with a mobile app or website like Bounce is the best solution because you’ll be able to search for the closest location and book ahead of time.

Where can I store luggage in Macau?

Macau will have a variety of luggage storage options. If you’re staying at a resort, you can always leave the bags with the concierge. Certain transportation hubs will have luggage lockers, but these aren’t as reliable as the ones in Hong Kong, so finding a secure luggage storage service would be your best bet.

What’s the best left luggage service in Hong Kong?

You can always leave your excess luggage with the porter service at your hotel, even prior to check-in. This can be terribly inconvenient, especially if you’re trying to sightsee on a travel day. There are luggage storage facilities throughout Hong Kong operated by services like Bounce. With dozens of convenient locations near the top attractions along with premium features like 24/7 support and a mobile app, Bounce is the top choice in Hong Kong.

Can I store my suitcases safely at Hong Kong International Airport?

Hong Kong International Airport offers a fairly reliable luggage storage facility on Level 5 of Terminal 1 in the non-restricted area of the airport. With fees varying from $2 per hour to $20 per day, it’s a fairly affordable service, especially for layovers. There is a kiosk for weighing, measuring, and checking in luggage, and the fee will be calculated there. Unfortunately, luggage exceeding 66 pounds or 66 inches in length will be subject to additional fees.

Things to do near Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal

Victoria Peak

This is one of the obligatory tourist destinations that really lives up to the hype. The highest point on Hong Kong Island offers dumbfounding views of the city, harbor, and surrounding landscapes. Victoria Peak isn't just a viewing platform, though. With miles of trails to get some steps in (along with some controversial retail spaces and restaurants), you’ll have plenty to do once you’re up at the top of Victoria Peak.

You can engage in some retail therapy or grab some mimosas at a brunch spot, or you can take the more adventurous route and explore the heavily wooded path up to the Lions View Point Pavillion, complete with Chinese pagodas and stellar views of Kowloon. To get up here, you can take the Peak Tram up the slopes. It’s easily accessible from most parts of the city, with plenty of transit stops serving Hong Kong’s best attraction.

Man Mo Temple

For a more contemplative morning or afternoon, you can visit one of the oldest temples in Hong Kong. The Man Mo Temple is revered among locals honoring the Taoist deities of literature and war. It’s situated right in the middle of the city center, which makes the tranquility of its garden and courtyard all the more amazing.

One of the most notable facets of this temple is the smoke that hangs in the humid air, creating an otherworldly (and disorienting, after a while) feeling. Through the veil of smoke, the architectural accents of the temple, like the spirals hanging from the roof and the elaborate wood carvings, create a psychedelic atmosphere. It’s important to note that silence is required of all visitors, so it’s best to be as respectful as possible when visiting with a group.

Check out Hong Kong’s endlessly hip PMQ

Much of Hong Kong’s retail strives toward sleek luxury aesthetics and high-end settings. For one of the more interesting shopping and cultural experiences, head to the PMQ cultural hub. Originally a residence for the Hong Kong police who had families, this modernist building has been repurposed into a shopping and cultural hub where local brands and companies have found a space where their unique offerings are truly showcased. There are frequent pop-ups from a wide variety of Hong Kong-based brands. There are plenty of trendy restaurants and cafes along with an open-air courtyard. There are also plenty of street art installations and an exhibition space for local events. Check out the calendar to see what events are happening, because PMQ essentially has something going on every night of the week.

There’s also the Airport Express shuttle bus that heads directly to the Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal The H1 bus takes less than 40 minutes door-to-door as it drops you off outside Shun Tak Centre.

How to get to Victoria Peak from the Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal

If you want the best views of Hong Kong, there’s only one direction to go, and that’s up. Luckily, you won’t have to take out a second mortgage and rent a helicopter to achieve this, as you can be shifted up the slopes to Victoria Peak for incredible views. The highest point of Hong Kong Island is easily accessible via tram service that runs throughout the day. From the Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal transit stop, you can take several buses (N8X, N90, or N182) or the Island Line from Sheung Wan Station. These head directly to the Peak Tram Terminus and the trip takes less than 20 minutes and costs only a few dollars. From there, it’s a short ride (and scenic) up the mountain.

How to get to Golden Bauhinia Square from the Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal

Built to commemorate the handover of governance in 1997, the Golden Bauhinia Square is a vast monument complex next to the Expo Promenade and waterfront. It’s a popular place to head for some fresh air and amazing views of the harbor. It’s one of the top attractions near the ferry terminal and Sun Tak Centre. All you’ll have to do is take the #961 bus to the Wan Chai Bus Terminal (HKCECE). From here, it’s a short walk to the Gilden Bauhinia Square (with ample signage to guide you).
