About Lucca

Lucca is in northern Italy, close to the west coast of the peninsula and the Ligurian Sea. Occupying a fertile plain with a backdrop of impressive mountains, Lucca is a picture-perfect example of a historic Tuscan town.

Lucca's origins go back to the Etruscan civilization, but it became a Roman town in 180 BC. The modern city still preserves the grid laid out by the Romans, and traces of their presence can be seen at the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro and other locations throughout the town.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, Lucca became a center of Jewish life and an important town in the silk trade. In 1160, Lucca proclaimed itself an independent city and stayed that way for almost 500 years. Despite occasional wars with nearby Florence and other powerful states, Lucca was able to manage its own affairs as a Republican until 1805, when Napoleon Bonaparte conquered the city and installed his sister as its ruler. In the mid-19th century, Lucca finally became part of Tuscany and shortly after joined a unified Italy in 1860.

As a small independent city surrounded by powerful rivals, Lucca developed impressive city walls that still define the town today. In recent times, the city has become known for its festivals, including the Lucca Summer Festival, which hosts some of the biggest names in music from around the world, and the Lucca Comics and Games festival, Europe's biggest festival of its kind.

While in this walled Tuscan city, expect a fun-filled holiday. Plan to bike or walk along the city walls, discovering piazzas and quaint cafes. You’ll also see shopping avenues, majestic towers and exquisite gardens. Whether it’s an afternoon of browsing the boutiques or museum hopping you have in mind, download the Bounce app to stow your non-essentials while you enjoy your day.

We don’t have a size limit and we always have room available. Leave your suitcases and baggage worries behind for a few hours and enjoy Lucca to the fullest.

Top things to do in Lucca

As a city with a long and fascinating history, Lucca has plenty of unique attractions to offer. This well-preserved town offers a glimpse of the glory of the Italian Renaissance, and several of its iconic monuments are not to be missed.

Activities and attractions near Lucca

Leaning Tower of Pisa

This icon of Italy is one of the most famous buildings in the world. Pisa can be reached via a 20-minute train ride from Lucca, and it's worth making the journey just for the photo opportunity with the iconic tower. However, Pisa has more to offer than just its tower. Its Cathedral, baptistery, and art gallery are all worth a visit, and there are also plenty of great restaurants to explore Tuscan cuisine.

Leaning Tower of Pisa bag policy

You’ll need to store your luggage before you visit this famous landmark since bags aren’t allowed inside. We’ve partnered with local hotels and stores in Lucca and Pisa to create luggage storage facilities so you can store your belongings with ease.

Parco Alpi Apuane

If you want to spend time in nature, the Parco Alpi Apuane is the place to go. Located around an hour and a half from Lucca, this sprawling park is one of Italy's foremost mountain regions. Hike the trails, paddle in the lakes and rivers, and enjoy the natural splendor of Italy far away from the crowds of the busy cities.

Livorno

One of Italy's major ports, the ancient fortified city of Livorno is only a short distance from Lucca and provides a wonderful day trip from the city. Visit historic forts, wander along the seafront promenade, and enjoy some of the freshest seafood you'll find anywhere in this scenic coastal town.

Lucca Cathedral

See the spiritual heart of the city at Lucca Cathedral. This impressive building dates back to 1063 and the Cathedral has been expanded many times since then. The Lucca Cathedral is home to priceless works of art by Tintoretto and Ghirlandaio, among others. It also has an unusual labyrinth with an inscription that refers to pagan mythology.

Lucca Cathedral bag policy

It isn’t clear whether you can bring bags into the cathedral, but similar buildings often have a no bag policy to save space. For your convenience, take advantage of our Lucca luggage storage service and drop off your things with us. Unlike luggage lockers, it will cost the same price to store any size of bag.

Mura di Lucca

Explore Lucca's ancient defenses with a walk along the city walls. Lucca has been a walled city for almost its entire existence but it's the Renaissance walls, built in 1545, that are the most impressive. They make a great place to stroll and get excellent views over the city.

Piazza dell'Anfiteatro

Take in the vibrant atmosphere of Lucca at the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro. Nothing remains of the Roman amphitheater that once stood on the site, but the buildings around this public square follow the oval shape of the ancient arena. It's a great place to enjoy a coffee at one of the many cafés or restaurants and watch the world go by.

Torre Guinigi

Get above it all at the Torre Guinigi. Lucca has many ancient towers, but this one is perhaps the most unusual. Built as a home in 1384, it's worth climbing the 230 steps to reach the rooftop garden and its spectacular views over the city.

Torre Guinigi bag policy

It’s unclear whether suitcases can accompany you during your visit, but carrying luggage up the tower's steps will be a hassle. Store luggage at one of our baggage storage locations beforehand; it’s easy to find luggage storage services nearby when you download the Bounce app.

Villa Mansi

See how the aristocrats lived at the Villa Mansi. This sprawling mansion dates back to the 16th century and was built as a country retreat for the wealthy Benedetti family. These days, the Villa and its manicured grounds function as a museum dedicated to the lifestyle of the Renaissance nobility.

Villa Mansi bag policy

We’re not sure if bags are allowed inside Villa Mansi, but it’s best to find luggage storage in the area before you visit. Thanks to our security measures your items are safe, allowing you to explore the city for the whole day without having to carry your things around.

After you’ve wandered through museums, take a walk through a city park. With your luggage in safe hands, you can enjoy your day for as long as you’d like.

Shopping in Lucca

Il Panda

Il Panda is one of the best places to shop for shoes in Lucca. They offer a decent selection of shoe varieties, from boots and high heels to sneakers and flats. They also have clothing and accessories on display as well.

De Simoni

For unique and high-quality Italian apparel, make your way to De Simoni. Everything you find on their shelves has been made in Italy. They have an excellent women’s section and some lovely suits and shirts.

Vittorio Melecchi

This store has a distinct retro vibe and a fantastic selection of clothing. Everything is well made and the staff is friendly, which is why customers find it to be one of the best clothing shops in the city.

Don’t let shopping bags stop you from seeing all of the stores. If your arms are full of purchases, book with one of our highly-rated store partners and continue your shopping spree.
