About La Placita de Santurce
Santurce is a neighborhood, or known locally as barrio, in the Puerto Rican municipality of San Juan. Located a few minutes from the historic Old San Juan, this exciting and creative neighborhood is a hotbed for the arts and culture. This is because some years ago, artists started moving into the area, where rundown buildings were rented out cheaply. Today, Santurce has become one of Puerto Rico’s most vibrant locations and a popular tourist destination.
Although there are many points of interest in the Santurce neighborhood, perhaps its most noteworthy attraction is La Placita de Santurce, or colloquially known as La Placita. Found across Baldorioty de Castro Highway, this unique marketplace has been the center of activity in both the neighborhood of Santurce and in all of San Juan. During the day, the area is teeming with vendors that sell fresh produce such as meat, fruits, vegetables, and more. In the evening, however, the community comes to life as restaurants and bars start to open. Dining staples and local kiosks are abundant, serving some local delicacies such as alcapurrias, empanadillas, and bacalaitos. Locals and tourists alike also flock to La Placita to socialize, have a few drinks, listen to live music and dance some salsa or merengue. The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (MAPR) is a 130,000 square-foot space known as one of the country’s leading cultural facilities. Here, you will find a vast collection of both local and international works and antiquities dating back to the 17th century. Not your ordinary museum, MAPR also hosts regular workshops and concerts for guests who want to learn and appreciate the arts. While at the museum, don’t forget to check out the garden, which is filled with interesting sculptures, and the gift shop where you can buy souvenirs and other novelty items. Nestled on Ponce de Leon in Santurce, the Centro de Bellas Luis A. Ferré is the top facility in the country for performance arts.
