About Old San Juan
Old San Juan is a historic district found on the island of San Juan in Puerto Rico. Located at the “northwest triangle,” it is the oldest settlement in the country and is the historic center of the city. The site was once a vital Spanish port and outpost until 1898 when the Spanish-American War ended, and the United States seized Puerto Rico. To this day, however, the influence of the Spaniards are still evident in the flat-roofed brick and stone architecture and the narrow cobblestone streets that date back to the 16th century.
In 1949, the San Juan National Historic Site was developed to preserve the fortifications in Old San Juan. The civilian population within the walls of San Juan also continuously rose. Presently, the district is a bustling area filled with shops, restaurants, cafés, plazas, churches, and colorful houses. Furthermore, Old San Juan has become one of Puerto Rico’s key tourism hotspots, both domestically and internationally, due to the abundance of historic sites and architectural wonders as well as the thriving culinary and shopping scene found here. Although several churches claim to be the oldest in America, it is actually Cathedral of San Juan Bautista that owns this distinction. The church’s history could be traced back to 1521, which was around the beginning of the Spanish colonization of Puerto Rico.
Apart from the majestic appearance of the church, it is also renowned as the final resting place of Juan Ponce De Leon. This Spanish explorer and pioneering governor of Puerto Rico made a name for himself as the man searching for the “Fountain of Youth.” His remains were moved to the Cathedral in 1908 and are currently housed in the white tomb that most tourists visit.
