About Old San Juan

Old San Juan is a historic district found on the island of San Juan in Puerto Rico. Located at the “northwest triangle,” it is the oldest settlement in the country and is the historic center of the city. The site was once a vital Spanish port and outpost until 1898 when the Spanish-American War ended, and the United States seized Puerto Rico. To this day, however, the influence of the Spaniards are still evident in the flat-roofed brick and stone architecture and the narrow cobblestone streets that date back to the 16th century.

In 1949, the San Juan National Historic Site was developed to preserve the fortifications in Old San Juan. The civilian population within the walls of San Juan also continuously rose. Presently, the district is a bustling area filled with shops, restaurants, cafés, plazas, churches, and colorful houses. Furthermore, Old San Juan has become one of Puerto Rico’s key tourism hotspots, both domestically and internationally, due to the abundance of historic sites and architectural wonders as well as the thriving culinary and shopping scene found here. From eating traditional Puerto Rican delicacies to learning about the long history behind the walls of the city, Old San Juan is the perfect place to learn and appreciate Puerto Rico’s rich culture.

Fun fact: The historic district of Old San Juan is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Luggage Storage near La Casa Blanca

One of the oldest structures erected in Old San Juan, La Casa Blanca was initially built as the home of Juan Ponce de Leon, Puerto Rico’s first governor. Built in 1521 and reaching completion in 1523, La Casa Blanca is the first fortification in the isle of San Juan. Unfortunately, Juan Ponce de Leon passed away before he could even move into the house. Instead, his family moved into the home and lived there for two centuries.

La Casa Blanca has been converted into a museum and is presently one of Puerto Rico’s cultural highlights and a well-known tourist attraction. The museum houses a collection of artifacts from the 16th and 17th centuries. To make the most of your time in La Casa Blanca, drop off your things at a Bounce location near the museum.

Luggage Storage near Cathedral of San Juan Bautista

The Cathedral of San Juan Bautista is one of the most opulent religious buildings in all of Puerto Rico, and also one of its most significant as it is the seat of the Archdiocese of Puerto Rico. Although several churches claim to be the oldest in America, it is actually Cathedral of San Juan Bautista that owns this distinction. The church’s history could be traced back to 1521, which was around the beginning of the Spanish colonization of Puerto Rico.

Apart from the majestic appearance of the church, it is also renowned as the final resting place of Juan Ponce De Leon. This Spanish explorer and pioneering governor of Puerto Rico made a name for himself as the man searching for the “Fountain of Youth.” His remains were moved to the Cathedral in 1908 and are currently housed in the white tomb that most tourists visit. Whether you’re here for a tour or attending a mass, you don’t want to drag around heavy luggage. Instead, find a Bounce location near the Cathedral and leave your stuff there.

Luggage Storage near La Perla

Located along the Atlantic coast, La Perla is a ramshackle town found on the northern side of Old San Juan. Spanning about 600 meters, this historical barrio was established during the late 19th century. It was previously a site for slaughterhouses because slaves and non-white servants were required to be separated from the community as per the law.

La Perla is a seemingly chaotic area that you won’t expect to see in such a well-renowned destination like Old San Juan. However, it arouses curiosity in both locals and tourists because of its rich history, distinct atmosphere, and excellent view of the Atlantic Ocean. Moreover, the local government has constantly pushed for development of tourism in the area. Residents of La Perla are proud and relentless, but they have the utmost respect for visitors, which only adds to the appeal of the neighborhood.

A visit to this complicated area is a truly special experience that you probably won’t find in any other place in Old San Juan. For your trip to La Perla, it’s best to not bring too many items with you; find a Bounce location in the area and secure your luggage there before heading out.
