Hobart is the capital of the island state, Tasmania, in Australia, with a population of just over 240,000. It began as a penal colony back in 1804 when the British used it to keep the prisoners away from the general population. Before that, it was occupied by the Nuennone of the Mouheneener tribe for over 35,000 years. These Aboriginal Tasmanians lived an isolated life until the British started shipping their prisoners onto the island. 

Being on an island, you know there is plenty of beach to enjoy for those who want to get some sun. But with an average high of only 63, you don’t have to worry about getting overheated. The warm months of November through March are the best for those who want to enjoy some water sports. 

Today the island is inhabited mostly by English and Australians, with only a 3.8% population of indigenous peoples left. Whether you want to see the oldest art collection in the city or the shipwrecks from the nearby waters, you can choose from over two dozen museums in Hobart. Some are large and fancy, while others invite you to sit down and have a beer. 

Cascade Brewery: If you like beer or just want to see how beer is made in Hobart, visit Cascade Brewery. You can take a trip back in time to learn about the founders of the first Cascade beer and taste four different types of beer made fresh in the brewery. There are two types of tours. One is a historic tour, and the other is more for those who want to learn how to make beer. You have to be able to climb 100 stairs and walk one mile to enjoy the brewery experience, though.

Hobart’s Museum of Old and New Art (MONA): Expect the unexpected at this museum because it is nothing like your typical art museum. You will go through secret rooms, tunnels, and light wells to see amazing works of art and historic pieces. The museum also offers the Faro Experiment for those who love surprises. You will be served a mystery menu, so you have no idea what you will be eating or drinking while you are there. 

Maritime Museum of Tasmania: With shipwrecks, whaling, and old boats, this two-story gallery has some awesome things to see. In the first gallery, you can find the lens from the Goose Island lighthouse, Aboriginal canoes, the May Queen, and tons of whaling gear. The second gallery has scuba diving gear from the 1930s, boatbuilding tools, and models, as well as navy items to explore. 

Whether you are looking for some bargains from a secondhand shop or fashion from a boutique, Hobart has it. In the middle of the city, you can find malls, shops, and street vendors galore. Here are a few of the local faves. 

Malls: One of the most popular malls in Hobart is the Cat and Fiddle Arcade with dozens of shops, eateries, a supermarket, and newsagents. Located on Murray Street, you can also find the Centerpoint Shopping Center right nearby, which has a similar choice of retailers and food with 30 shops to peruse. Elizabeth Street Mall on Elizabeth Street has over 100 retailers from Ally Fashion to Zing Pop Culture. 

Markets: The island is popular for its outdoor markets as well, with many to choose from. The Salamanca Market is the most popular but is only open on Saturdays. For fresh food, try the Tasmania Farm Gate Market on Sundays between Murray and Elizabeth Streets. For a quirky market open daily, check out the Margate Train, which is a passenger train full of shops from secondhand shops to edible goods. You can find it on Channel Highway. 

Specialty Shops: If you enjoy vintage items from the 40s through the 70s, head to Hello Gorgeous on Barrack Street. For those who like vinyl records, CDs, and t-shirts, Tommy Gun Records on Elizabeth Street is a good place to look. Bookworms should try the Hobart Book Shop on Salamanca Square. And for handmade items like clothing, candles, and jewelry, On Hampden Creative on Hampden Road is perfect. 

Tasmanians are proud of their food, and some of the delights you may find include Flinders Island lamb, black truffles, leatherwood honey, and whiskey marinated salmon. Here are some of the local favorites. 

Local Food: Try some meat pies at Jackman & McRoss on Hampden Road. They also serve amazing seafood, baked goods, and breakfast food. The Den Bar & Restaurant on Salamanca Place serves great wings, sticky duck, pork belly, and calamari, among other delicious things. And the Drunken Admiral on Davey Road has excellent scallops and prawns. 

Pizza, Pasta, and Burgers: For some pizza and pasta served the Tasmanian way, check out Solo Pasta and Pizza on King Street. The calzones are huge, and the pasta is perfect. For the best burgers, head to Jack Greene on Salamanca Place, the Cascade Brewery Bar on Cascade Road, or the Burger Haus on Elizabeth Street. You will never want McDonald’s again after you taste a burger in Tasmania. 

Desserts: Honey Badger Dessert Café on Salamanca Square has chocolate cheesecake, brownies, fruit, and more. If you like waffles, go to Liverpool Street’s Waffle On, where you can get them made dozens of different ways. And Sweet Envy on Elizabeth Street is a delightful shop with cupcakes like you have never tasted. Chocolate on chocolate on chocolate with chocolate icing. They have other desserts and food too, but the cupcakes are famous.
