About the Van Gogh Museum

Vincent van Gogh is one of the world's most famous artists. As a native son of the Netherlands, the bulk of his surviving work is in Amsterdam. The van Gogh Museum represents the largest collection of the artist's work anywhere in the world.

Receiving more than two million visitors a year, this is the most visited museum in the Netherlands, and one of the most visited museums in the world. As a result, it can get quite busy, especially during summer. It's about the last place you want to be dragging heavy bags around with you.

You should also be aware that as with many museums, the van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam prohibits large bags. There are no lockers available at the museum, so it's best to find a place to store your luggage before visiting. Check for Bounce luggage storage locations in Amsterdam so you can wander the galleries unencumbered.

As well as around 600 works by Vincent himself, the van Gogh Museum also displays works by his contemporaries. With work by Rodin, Gauguin, Monet, and Toulouse-Lautrec, among others, you could easily spend a day or more in this sprawling museum.

Things to do near the Van Gogh Museum

The van Gogh Museum is centrally located in Amsterdam’s Museumskwartier. This makes it a fantastic destination for art lovers. Not only can you visit the van Gogh Museum itself, but you can also explore some of Amsterdam’s other famous museums.

But there's more to the Dutch capital than art and history. The van Gogh Museum's central location allows you to explore some of the many different sides of this legendary city for yourself. Don't miss:

  • The Rijksmuseum. As the Netherlands ' national Museum, this is the best place to explore the country's art and history. Home to Rembrandt's Night Watch, more works by van Gogh, and countless other Dutch Masters, this is a must.
  • Vondelpark. Just a few steps from the museum, this sprawling park provides an oasis of calm in the middle of what can be a bustling city. Once you've had your fill of art, breathe in the tranquility and perhaps enjoy a picnic lunch in the shade of the trees.
  • Stedelijk Museum. For a more contemporary take on the art of the Netherlands, visit the Stedelijk Museum. Only a short walk from the van Gogh Museum, the galleries here house one of the country's most comprehensive collections of modern art.
  • The Heineken Experience. This green-bottled beer is one of the Netherlands' most famous international exports. Visit the brewery and take the innovative tour that celebrates this ubiquitous beverage.
  • Easy Times Coffeeshop. Another thing Amsterdam is notorious for is its coffee shops that serve something a little stronger than coffee. Just a short walk from the van Gogh Museum, Easy Times Coffeeshop is a relaxed place that provides an ideal introduction to this facet of Dutch life.
  • Red light district. Amsterdam is famous for its liberal policies, and nowhere is that more clear than in the famous red-light district. In the heart of the city, the red light district is one of the city's main tourist attractions. And while it can occasionally be on the seedy side, it's hard to understand the city without coming to terms with this side of it. Tours are available that will give you a deeper understanding of the area.

Transit options near the van Gogh Museum

  • The Rijksmuseum transit station is served by tram lines 2, 5, and 12, along with many bus lines.
  • Amsterdam Zuid subway station is a 30-minute walk away from the museum, or you can reach it on any of the streetcar lines from the Rijksmuseum.
  • Tramlines 2 and 12 can also take you to Centraal, Amsterdam's main train station that provides service to Schiphol Airport.

Luggage storage at the van Gogh Museum

Part of Amsterdam’s charm is its narrow streets and endless canals. While it makes a great place to explore on foot, it’s not ideal for dragging luggage around with you.
