About Park Güell

Park Güell, a public park system composed of gardens and architectural elements located on Carmel Hill in Barcelona, Spain, is one of Antoni Gaudí's most colorful and enchanting contributions to Modernism. Eusebi Güell, a prominent industrialist and Gaudí's patron, commissioned the park in the early 20th century, envisioning it as a stylish residential area. However, this vision was never fully realized, and the area was instead transformed into a unique public park.

One of the park's most iconic sites is the main terrace, surrounded by a long bench in the form of a sea serpent. The bench is covered in trencadís, a mosaic made from broken ceramic tiles, which has become synonymous with Gaudí's work. This terrace offers panoramic views of the city and the bay, so you'll almost always find a crowd of tourists peering out over the city with their phones or cameras in hand.

The entrance to Park Güell is marked by two whimsical gatehouses, reminiscent of gingerbread houses, which were originally designed as the caretaker's house and the waiting room. The Dragon Stairway, another notable feature, leads to the park from the main entrance, with a famous dragon sculpture adorned in colorful tiling, symbolizing Catalan nationalism.

Another significant element is the Hypostyle Room, intended to be the market for the estate. It consists of 86 striped columns, with the ceiling decorated with mosaic tiles arranged in sun and moon designs, showcasing Gaudí's innovative use of space and light.

Despite its initial commercial failure, Park Güell was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, recognizing its outstanding universal value. Today, it remains one of Barcelona's most beloved landmarks, drawing visitors from around the world to explore its vibrant colors, whimsical structures, and breathtaking views, all of which bear the unmistakable mark of Gaudí's genius.

Park Güell bag policy

The Park Güell bag policy isn't strict at all. It's up to you if you want to explore the park with your suitcases and other bags in tow. Other than a backpack, it's typically best to leave all your extra belongings behind at a central luggage storage location either in the Barcelona city center or near Park Güell. This is a sprawling park where you'll definitely be covering a lot of varied terrain with hills and uneven spots. We don't recommend that you bring any large bags or roller suitcases with you. Doing that is sure to interfere with your experience.

Can you store luggage at Park Güell?

No, there are no luggage storage facilities within the park. And since you're bound to be getting in a lot of steps, the best bet is to store any extra luggage in advance with a service like Bounce. We can securely store any size of bag that'll get in your way for as long as you need while you're visiting Barcelona and the park itself.

Is there somewhere to leave luggage in Barcelona?

Yes, as a major city, there are many options for luggage storage in the city center of Barcelona and the outskirts. The most flexible and affordable option is leaving your bags with a Barcelona luggage storage operated by Bounce. The locations are always convenient and the luggage storage cost starts at €5 per bag per day.

Can you bring a backpack to Park Güell?

Absolutely. This is the best way to carry your items inside the park as you'll likely be doing a lot of walking. You can also pack food and drinks with you to enjoy in one of the designated picnic areas.

How do I find a luggage storage location near Park Güell?

The best (and easiest) way to find a suitable Park Güell luggage storage spot is to download the Bounce app or use the website. The system will show you the locations closest to your current location or show you all the available options on a map. Book luggage storage online in a few minutes and then it's easy to travel to the most convenient option.

How to get to Park Güell

From Barcelona Airport

Driving from Barcelona Airport to Park Guell is the quickest method. The drive should take a little less than 30 minutes. If you don't have a vehicle, the taxi fare will cost up to €70 one way, which can really add up. On the other hand, you can use public transport. Using the train, the journey will be an hour or more depending on connections. Take the R2N train from El Prat Airport and transfer at Passeig De Gràcia onto the L3 line towards Trinitat Nova. Exit at Vallcarca and then you'll need to walk about 15 minutes.

From Barcelona Sants Station

Barcelona-Sants Estació is the main station in the city, so tourists may need to get to this Gaudi attraction from here. The drive or taxi here is shorter than from the airport and should take around ten minutes. The taxi fare will likely be around €15 to €20. Alternatively, you can hop on bus line 27 for €2.40 and prepare for a 20-minute ride. The bus stops at Av De Vallcarca - Pl Lesseps and when you arrive here, you'll just need to walk about ten minutes to the park entrance.

Things to do near Park Güell

Explore the Gracia neighborhood

In this bohemian area, Plaça del Sol is the perfect starting point, known for its lively atmosphere and surrounded by numerous bars and cafes where locals gather to socialize.

Into art? Prioritize a visit to Verdi Street, where you'll find an independent cinema that showcases international films. If the timing works out, the Festa Major de Gràcia, an annual festival held in August, transforms the streets into a spectacular display of creativity and community spirit, with residents competing to create the most elaborately decorated street themes.

The gardens of La Villa de Gràcia offer a serene setting with lush greenery and shaded areas, ideal for a leisurely afternoon and continuing the park theme post-Park Güell. And if you have yet to get your fill of Gaudi, head over to Casa Vicens. It's considered the first major work by the Catalan architect and was completed in 1885. Casa Vicens was originally designed as a summer house for the Vicens family and is notable for its striking Moorish influences.

How to get to Gracia

After you finish your sightseeing at the park, head out on foot for about 15 minutes towards the sea and you'll be in the lovely Gracia neighborhood.

Los Bunkers del Carmel

Los Bunkers del Carmel is perched atop Turó de la Rovira in Barcelona, and this vantage point offers one of the most breathtaking 360-degree views of the Catalan capital. Originally constructed as anti-aircraft fortifications during the Spanish Civil War, these remnants of history have evolved into a popular spot for residents and tourists. Unlike the more manicured viewpoints around the city, Los Bunkers del Carmel has retained a rugged charm that adds to its appeal. Make the trek up to the summit to be rewarded with amazing views of the iconic Sagrada Familia and the glittering Mediterranean Sea.

How to get to Los Bunkers del Carmel

Form Park Güell, this destination is also quite walkable. The walk is about 20 minutes along typical city streets like Carrer de Mühlberg. Just be prepared for a bunch of stairs!

The Gaudi Experience

While it might sound a little too much like a theme park for your liking, the Gaudi Experience is a worthwhile stop near Park Güell to get a great overview of the architect and his works, which you really can't escape in Barcelona.

The Gaudí Experience is an immersive and interactive exhibition that uses state-of-the-art 4D technology to bring Gaudí's imaginative architecture and designs to life. Visitors are taken on a visual journey through a forest that transforms into architectural columns, chimneys that defy the laws of physics, and dragon scales that become the roof tiles of Casa Batlló. The experience is enhanced by surround sound, moving seats, and special effects that simulate elements like wind and fog, creating a vivid impression of Gaudí's visionary work. You'll also get to see scale models, audiovisuals, and interactive walls providing detailed insights into Gaudí's techniques and inspirations.
