About Sagrada Familia

The iconic Sagrada Familia is at the top of most Spanish bucket lists. While many people flock to the site to see the stunning architecture in real life, the structure is actually a significant Roman Catholic building. The church was even consecrated by Pope Benedict XVI who awarded it a minor basilica status.

To this day, the minor basilica remains largely unfinished. Designed by famous Spanish architect, Antoni Gaudi, the building of the church began in 1882 but progress was limited due to lack of funding. The process was further disrupted by the Spanish Civil War, when a revolutionary lit a fire in the crypt that destroyed much of the original design in 1936. Work on the building began again in the 1950s, however has moved at a glacial pace. Modern technology has helped to speed up the process and construction reached the halfway mark in 2010. It is anticipated that the minor basilica will be complete by 2026 to truly bring Gaudi’s vision to life.

Despite its unfinished status, Sagrada Familia is still an impressive site and worthy of its top tourist destination label.
