Lime Street Station is the main train station for the city of Liverpool. Liverpool has always been one of the UK's most important port cities, and so it's no surprise that the railways came here early. Opened in 1836, Lime Street station is one of the oldest still-operating train stations in the world. To this day, the station is still served by the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, which was the first intercity rail line ever built. Of course, nowadays, Lime Street Station also serves many other regional and national destinations.
Lime Street wasn't Liverpool's first railway station, however. The very first station was built in 1830 just outside the city. However, it soon became clear that there was a need for a more central terminus. The land to build Lime Street Station was purchased for 9,000 pounds, a figure which seems laughable today.
As the Industrial Revolution continued and British trade made the country rich, the city of Liverpool and its train stations grew rapidly. The station underwent several expansions in the 19th and 20th centuries, making it into the transit hub it is today. Now, the station serves around 15 million passengers every year.
The central location of Lime Street Station in Liverpool city center makes it the ideal place to begin your trip to the city. All you need to do is drop off your bags and step out of the station to find yourself right in the heart of this vibrant northern city.
See the historical grandeur of this important city at St. George's Hall. The moment you step out of Lime Street Station, the neoclassical architecture of St. George's Hall will be right in front of you. Shop till you drop at St. John’s shopping center. This indoor mall has been the heart of Liverpool retail since it opened in 1969. As well as all the usual high street brands you would expect, the shopping center also has several cafés, restaurants, and even pubs where you can take a break and refresh yourself.
Experience the bustling heart of Liverpool at Queen Square. This open space surrounded by bars, restaurants, and a casino is where Liverpool comes to let its hair down. There's always something going on in Queen Square, day or night, and it's the perfect place to mingle with the locals.
Travel the world without leaving Liverpool at the National Museums. This massive museum complex is home to a World Museum, the Museum of Liverpool, the National Slavery Museum, and other institutions. Best of all, these museums are free to visit, and are the perfect place to explore on a rainy day.
Lime Street Station has both high-speed and regional trains that connect it to every city in the UK. Direct trains go to Manchester and London, along with other major cities, making Lime Street easy to reach from anywhere in the UK.
To reach Liverpool airport, you'll need to take a train from Lime Street to Liverpool South Parkway. From there, you can catch a bus to the airport. Alternatively, bus 500 runs from the city center to the airport.
Lime Street Station is the heart of the proposed public transit network. There is an underground station that connects you to Liverpool's subway system, and most of the city's bus routes service the station.

This was so cool!!!! Great service, extremely easy to use, and totally affordable! I didn't know where I'd leave my luggage while we explored San Fran, so I easily Googled luggage storage and found this company. At first it was a little odd dropping my bag off at a chocolate store, but the lady at the register was able to immediately pull up my reservation without any problems and then she put a lock on my suitcase and gave me a card to get it back with. She pushed the bag to the back of their storage room and I came back about 6 hours later to pick it up. Great service, I will definitely be using this again when I travel!
