About Capri

Located in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the coast of Italy, Capri is blessed with a stunning location. And thanks to the gorgeous scenery and reliably sunny weather, Capri has always been a tourist resort. Back in the days of the Roman Republic, wealthy politicians and businessmen built villas on the island. Emperor Tiberius loved the island so much he built a grand palace on a high point of Capri and ruled the Empire from there until his death.

After the fall of the Empire, Capri lost a lot of its importance. Subject to continuous raids by pirates, the grand villas fell into disrepair. The small population of the island relied on fishing and agriculture to support themselves, helped by the fertile soil and abundant sun of the island.

But a place as beautiful is Capri wasn't destined to stay a secret for long. In the 19th and early 20th century, Capri became popular with wealthy foreigners. A variety of artists and writers made their way to the island over the subsequent decades. Russian writer Maxim Gorky once lived on Capri and hosted Lenin at his house. British novelist Graham Greene had a house on the island. Jackie Onassis and Bridget Bardo were frequently spotted on the island in the 1960s. Mariah Carey still owns property there, as does Giorgio Armani.

But Capri isn’t a place only for the international jet set. Easily reached by ferry from Naples, it’s one of Italy’s most popular tourist destinations.

Things to do in Capri

  • See Capri through the eyes of a Roman Emperor at Villa Jovis. The palace of the Emperor Tiberius occupies a stunning setting on a high hill overlooking the island and the sea beyond. Now fallen into ruins, the palace is still an impressive and atmospheric place to ponder the island's history.
  • Escape the bustle of Capri town at Anacapri. Located on a hill away from the marina, this small settlement allows you to experience the less touristed side of the island. Wander the quaint streets and dine in family-run restaurants away from the crowds.
  • Marvel at a natural phenomenon at the famous Blue Grotto. You can reach the sea cave by a staircase carved into the cliff or on a boat tour. But either way, you’ll need to pay a local fisherman to bring you inside the cave in a rowboat. The ethereal blue color of the water is caused by the sunlight coming through a narrow gap from outside, and it needs to be seen to be believed.
  • Take a break from it all at the Marina Piccolo. On the other side of the narrow island from Marina Grande, the smaller marina gets fewer tourists and is a great place to relax. Rent a beach chair and an umbrella, go swimming in the crystal clear warm water, or rent a kayak or other small boat and explore the rocky coastline for yourself.
  • Try one of the island's culinary delights at Aldo's salumeria. Located in the Marina Grande, this grocery store has a delicatessen counter at the back where the owner and his family will make you fresh sandwiches to enjoy on the beach. Try the Caprese sandwich, an Italian classic that takes its name from the island.

Transit options in Capri

  • Naples has the nearest major airport to Capri. A bus runs from the airport to Naples train station, and from there you can catch the Metro to the port. The ferry from Naples takes around an hour to cross the bay to the island.
  • You can also reach Capri by ferry from Sorrento. This trip is much shorter, taking only around 25 minutes. Both ferries dock in the Marina Grande at Capri.
  • A network of buses connects the Marina Grande to the town of Capri, Anacapri, and other locations around the island. However, these small buses get incredibly busy in the summer. From the Marina Grande, you can also reach the town of Capri via a funicular railway that runs up the hill.

Luggage storage in Capri

As a small island with excellent weather, Capri is made for walking. Abundant hiking trails can take you all over the island. Besides, during the busy summer months, the public transit network is often overtaxed, and walking may be the quickest way to get anywhere.

Make exploring on foot easier by dropping off your heavy bags at a luggage storage shop in Capri. Bounce partners with local businesses to ensure you have a place to store your belongings while you see the sights.

Activities and attractions near Capri

  • Naples: Most people come to Capri by way of Naples. And although Naples is one of Italy's most maligned cities, it has done a lot to clean itself up in recent decades. The gorgeous streets of the Spanish quarter are just begging to be explored. And don't forget, Naples is the home of pizza. You haven't really had a pizza until you've had one in Naples. Afterward, enjoy a stroll along the Lungomare, the seafront promenade of the city, and enjoy spectacular views of the Bay of Naples and the volcanic Mount Vesuvius rising above it. Before making the ferry ride to the city, make sure to drop off any heavy bags at a luggage locker in Capri.
  • Pompeii: Step back in time to a Roman city at Pompeii. One of the world's most famous archaeological sites, Pompeii was a busy Roman port and home to some of the empire's wealthiest residents until precisely 79 A.D., when it was buried by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Now, the excavated city makes a haunting place to visit. Step inside Roman homes that are preserved as though the occupants just left them yesterday. It's about the closest thing to a time machine you're likely to experience. You'll do plenty of walking in this ancient city, so make sure to drop off extra bags at a Capri luggage storage shop before you go.
  • Amalfi coast: As if Capri wasn't enough by itself, the Amalfi coast is one of Italy's most beautiful areas. This cluster of colorful fishing villages set along the rocky coastline is endlessly charming. Dine on fresh seafood and enjoy a glass or two of the local wine as you watch the sunset over the Mediterranean. Each of the Amalfi coast villages has its own character, but together, they make up one of the world's most beguiling tourist destinations.
