About Pompeii

Pompeii was an ancient city in Italy that’s located in modern-day Pompeii, a comune in the country’s Campania region. When Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79, the city of Pompeii was buried under volcanic ash and pumice. Before its demise, the community was actually flourishing and had an intricate water system, a gymnasium, an amphitheater, and a port. Fortunately, most of the city’s ruins remain intact. It has now turned into one of Europe’s most well-known archaeological sites and a popular tourist destination. In fact, this UNESCO World Heritage Site welcomes more than 2 million visitors per year.

Stepping into Pompeii feels like traveling back in time. It gives visitors an opportunity to see an old city in its entirety – complete with temples, shops, theaters, and villas – and how the Romans lived during ancient times. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, you’ll surely have an incredible and memorable experience when exploring Pompeii. Furthermore, the old city is located within the Campania region, which is one of Italy’s most prominent tourist hotspots.

Fun fact: In an ironic twist of events, it is said that the eruption that engulfed Pompeii took place on August 24 79 AD, one day after the festival for the Roman god of fire, Vulcan. However, there is no concrete evidence to back this claim up except for the written record of Roman writer Pliny the Younger.

Things to Do in Pompeii

As the world’s largest archaeological site, the ancient city of Pompeii has plenty of exciting spots and things to discover for visitors. Before it was buried in ash, it was a fully-functional community. While some additions were made here and there, most of the city remains untouched. Also, Pompeii is situated in the tourist region of Campania, which means there are other places nearby that you can visit after exploring the city. Check out some of the best things to do when in Pompeii.

  • Head over to the Forum, which is the main square of Pompeii and where most of the activities took place before the city was engulfed by ash. In the heart of the Forum, you will find the magnificent Temple of Apollo.
  • Witness the compelling scene at Pompeii’s Garden of the Fugitives, where you will find casts of human bodies as they tried to take cover from the eruption. This spot is perhaps the ancient city’s most iconic image.
  • Check out Pompeii’s theaters – Teatro Grande and Teatro Piccolo – where the city’s residents watched different performances such as poetry reading, dance, and musical acts.
  • Visit the huge Amphitheater, found at the far end of Pompeii. It is the oldest surviving amphitheater in the country and had a seating capacity of 12,000 people.
  • Take a look at the different houses found within Pompeii. If you don’t know where to start, some of the ones worth checking out are House of the Vettii, House of Menander, House of Faun, and House of the Silver Wedding.
  • See the remarkable Villa of Mysteries, which is found just outside of the central area. The villa features some fantastic wall paintings that have been around since ancient times.
  • After a full day of exploring Pompeii, try out some of the most delicious local cuisine. Campania is the birthplace of several Italian food staples such as pizza. Some of the most popular restaurants in the area are Caupona Pompei, La Bettola Del Gusto, and Ristorante President.
