About Orlando Airport

The Orlando International Airport on Jeff Fuqua Boulevard in Orlando is the busiest airport in Florida and the 10th busiest in the United States. In fact, they serve more than 50 million passengers per year. The airport started out as an air force base named Orlando Army Air Field II in 1942 and was a base for strategic air command in the 1950s. Renamed McCoy Air Force Base after Colonel McCoy was killed there in 1958 during a competition, the base continued to be an important military base for another 20 years.

Nowadays, you can find over 50 eateries, including Dunkin Donuts, Chipotle, Outback Steakhouse, and Ruby Tuesday. Shopping is abundant here as well, with more than 60 retail shops. Whether you are looking for souvenirs, gifts, or something for yourself like sunglasses or a book, you can find many choices right inside the airport. You can even get a massage at the spa or meditate at one of the chapels if you are stressed. 

Orlando is a resort town with quite a few theme parks like Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, Fun Spot America, and SeaWorld. You can enjoy some sun on the Lakefront Beach less than a half-hour to the south or take a ride about 45 miles to the ocean where you can find Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral, and Playalinda. Don’t forget the sunscreen.

Fun Fact: Chewing gum is not sold anywhere in the airport or at any theme parks as an effort to keep the parks clean.

See the city from 400 feet in the air on the Wheel, play some games at Arcade City, or take a ride on the Pearl Express Train. You can even fly high on the tallest star flyer in the world. The Orlando Star Flyer is 450 feet tall and spins you around at 60 miles per hour. Not for the faint of heart or those who are afraid of heights. For a look at some marine animals, check out Sea Life Aquarium. Sea turtles, stingrays, sharks, and thousands of fish are waiting for you. But don’t miss Madame Tussauds Wax Museum to get some selfies with Taylor Swift, Wonder Woman, and even Aquaman. Enjoy some outdoor activities at Lake Eola Park on East Washington Street, about 20 minutes from the airport. The 23-acre lake is actually a sinkhole that has almost 4,500 feet of shoreline to enjoy. It has a depth of 80 feet at the deepest part. Rent a swan boat and paddle around the lake to get a unique view of the Orlando cityscape and get close to the famous fountain for some fun selfies. Keep your camera handy, so you can get some shots of the real live swans that call the park home. Take a walk around the lake on their 0.9-mile paved path and then go see the Japanese Rock Garden where they have a 20-foot long black marble block from Su Nan-Chen, the Mayor of Tainan in Taiwan. About 30 minutes from the airport on North Mills Avenue, the Orlando Museum of Art has exhibits from ancient times all the way up to the most modern times. Nestled in a forest of oak trees and lush green lawns, the museum offers collections from author Oliver Jeffers, the Highwaymen, and gorgeous beadwork and basketry from African artisans from hundreds of years ago. There is even a headdress from a Karamajong hunter of Uganda and dolls from Tsonga children. The pottery and other artifacts from the Ancient Americas Collections have objects from over 35 cultures with over 900 items to see. Some of the European items are from the early 14th century.
