Although not usually on most tourist itineraries, this vast burial place has been in use for 2,000 years and is a fascinating place to visit. Along with the ornate tombs of this parklike green space, you'll find a military memorial, a cat sanctuary, and even a playground.
• See a monument to more recent Italian history at Villa Torlonia. This villa was once the home of Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, and the grand building now contains a museum to the rise and fall of this infamous ruler.
• Check out one of Italy's most significant libraries at the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale. Don't let the modern building fool you; the library dates back to 1876 and houses books that go all the way back to the 16th century.
• Shop like a local at the Mercato Tiburtina. Away from the tourist crowds, this open-air market is a perfect place to experience a side of Rome most foreign visitors don't get to see. Plus, you'll find far lower prices than you would at one of Rome's more central markets.
• Get away from the noise and chaos of the city at Aniene Valley Nature Reserve. Popular with Romans looking for a break, the rolling meadows and quiet river of this park can make the noise of the sprawling city seem a long way away.

Transit options at Tiburtina Bus Station

• Both local and long-distance buses stop at Tiburtina Bus Station. It can be reached by a direct bus from the airport, and you can also catch a train from Fiumicino Airport to Tiburtina Railway Station, next to the bus station.
• The railway station is also connected to Rome's Metro system via Line B. The line goes direct to Rome's main train station, Termini, and also has stops on Via Cavour near the center of the city and at the Colosseum.
• Tramlines 2, 3, and 9 all stop a short walk away from the bus station and can get you easily to the heart of Rome.

• Catacombs: Not far from the modern bus station, you'll find some of Rome's most famous catacombs. Saints and early popes were buried in this underground labyrinth, and even if you're not a believer, the history of the site makes it a fascinating place to visit. • Villa Borghese: To the north of Rome's ancient walls, Villa Borghese is one of the city's foremost art galleries. And in a city like Rome, that's saying a lot. Home to priceless masterpieces by Bernini, Canova, Caravaggio, and Rubens, among other artists, you could spend hours in the sumptuous villa galleries. The sprawling grounds also serve as one of Rome's most popular parks and make the perfect place to get some fresh air or even enjoy a picnic under the shade of the tall trees. • Church of Santa Marie della Vittoria: See one of the world's artistic masterpieces the way its creator intended at the church of Santa Marie della Vittoria.
