About Bondi Beach

Bondi Beach started out as a stretch of land that was owned by one William Roberts in 1809. Several decades later, Francis O'Brien and his father-in-law Edward Smith Hall bought some of that land. Over the years, O’Brien transformed the area into a luxurious beachfront property and opened the space to the public. Bondi Beach surged in popularity in the late 1800s, and continues to do so to this day.

There’s been much debate concerning who or what inspired Bondi Beach’s name. Most records suggest that Bondi Beach borrows its name from the Aboriginal word “Boondi,” which means “to surf.” Others suggest that Bondi Beach’s name is somehow a reference to ancient Aboriginal stick fighting. What can’t be debated, however, is Bondi Beach’s popularity and the fact that Bondi is one of the biggest tourist hotspots in Australia.

Luggage Storage Near Black Sunday Monument

Black Sunday refers to one of the most harrowing days in Australia’s history. On February 6th, 1938, Bondi Beach was hit with three powerful tidal waves. Each wave crashed into Bondi Beach one after the other, dragging hundreds of beachgoers far out to sea. Thanks to the quick thinking and swift acting of local lifesavers, the number of casualties and injuries were greatly reduced. Nevertheless, 5 lives were lost on Black Sunday – hence the Black Sunday Monument. Travelers can visit the Black Sunday Monument to remember this sad day. Visitors to the site are asked to treat this monument with great care and respect. Guests should also use Bounce to store their things before visiting.
