About the station

Sydney Harbour and the city’s magnificent skyline are some of the most iconic images of Australia, which makes it an obvious travel destination for anyone heading down under. Unlike the sterile city centers of most cities, Sydney Central Business District (or CBD, if you ask an Aussie) is actually a hive of activity and culture worth exploring. Instead of samey international chains and a sea of grey, you’ll find local businesses and restaurants along with some of the most captivating architecture in the world. It’s an easy place to travel to, especially if you’re planning on utilizing Sydney’s well-run public transportation network.

One of the top transportation hubs in Sydney is the Town Hall Railway Station. This central station runs along the City Circle, an underground subway loop that connects Sydney’s many neighborhoods and suburbs. Having first opened in 1932, Town Hall Station is a nationally listed heritage site and represents one of the first important steps in the integration of public transport in Australian history. It’s not just a historic facility, either. Town Hall is one of the most-used commuter stations in Sydney and a vital part of the highly efficient. There are six platforms serving six tracks across its two levels. Town Hall services every major train line running through Sydney and connects with multiple bus lines.

If you’re taking the train around town, you’ll absolutely end up at Town Hall Station. Here’s everything you need to know about Sydney Town Hall Station:

Does Town Hall Station have luggage storage?

While it’s a well-run transit facility, there aren’t any lockers or storage units at Town Hall Station. If you need to find luggage storage options near Town Hall Station, your best bet is to find a service that operates in Sydney CBD. Many of these services will have mobile apps where you can find Sydney luggage storage locations and even book online.

Do Sydney train stations have lockers?

In Australia, it’s rare for transit facilities to offer lockers. If you need to conveniently store luggage in central Sydney for a few hours, you’ll want to plan accordingly and find a reliable place near the train station that can hold your belongings while you sightsee. Bounce is a great option for this.

Does Wynyard Station have lockers?

Like Town Hall, the nearby Wynyard Station doesn’t have lockers available. Luckily, the same luggage storage options offered for Town Hall will be convenient for commuting through Wynyard Station.

How does Bounce work?

The Bounce luggage storage service utilizes our vast network of partners (usually local businesses like shops or laundromats) to provide its customers with convenient access to luggage storage locations near travel hotspots. With dozens of Sydney locations, especially near the CBD, Bounce makes it easy to find and book luggage storage with its mobile app. All you’ll have to do is show your confirmation to the attendant, and you’ll be on your way!

Things to do near Town Hall Station

Queen Victoria Building

This is both a historic landmark and one of Sydney’s top shopping destinations. This Victorian-Gothic building was built back in 1898 and has been one of the crown jewels in Sydney’s architectural portfolios ever since. Its opulent interiors were inspired by Venetian shopping arcades, and it boasts Romanesque features reminiscent of Europe’s department stores and stately buildings. Stained glass is everywhere, Byzantine copper features accent the ballroom and hallways. The Queen Victoria Building absolutely lives up to its regal name. The ‘QVB’ is anything but a stuffy landmark, however. Some of Sydney’s absolute best luxury retail is situated in these storied halls, and you’ll enjoy shopping around the 200 storefronts for everything from designer handbags to artisanal chocolates.

Australian Museum

The country’s first museum still operates in Sydney CBD today, and the storied halls of the Australian Museum are filled with thousands upon thousands of impressive archaeological finds and artifacts spanning hundreds of cultures and time periods. You’ll find impressive collections of Aboriginal items and wonderful exhibits showcasing the fascinating culture of indigenous Australians. You’ll also find artifacts from the early settlements of British and European travelers who first came to Australia. Further back, there are even the remains of dinosaur species that once inhabited the Australian continent. The museum also enjoys the privilege of hosting the premier traveling exhibitions, including the world-renowned Tutankhamun exhibit showcasing the treasures of the Golden Pharaoh.

Australian Museum bag policy

All luggage and larger items are prohibited at the Australian Museum. There is a cloakroom located at the ground floor entrance that can handle anything smaller than a carry-on luggage item. This makes it difficult to head directly from the airport to the Australian Museum, so finding an affordable luggage storage option that can handle larger items is a must.

Sydney Sea Life Aquarium

It’s no secret that Aussies appreciate wildlife more than most, and their passion is on full display at the sprawling aquarium overlooking Darling Harbour. You’ll find a vast array of exotic fish in their massive tanks, but there are a few highlights that make Sydney Sea Life one of the true destination aquariums in the world. Their great barrier reef tank features one of the most impressive specimens of its kind, and the jellyfish tank is a neon-colored dream. They have a penguin enclosure showcasing the slapstick playfulness of this species. One of the most unique offerings is their rescued dugong, which is one of the rarest aquatic mammals in the world. While a trip to the aquarium is the perfect place for family fun, there’s also ample information about conservation efforts that make it all the more worthwhile.

Sydney Sea Life Aquarium bag policy

There isn’t a published policy for the size of items allowed inside, but there aren’t any luggage storage facilities offered onsite. While you might be able to get away with a backpack or other versatile personal item, you won’t want to be lugging your bags around the aquarium all day. That’s why Bounce’s luggage storage locations in Sydney CBD are so useful.

Hyde Park

If you want to escape the highly urban surroundings of Sydney CBD, simply walk a few blocks to the beloved Hyde Park to stroll through its tree-lined paths (including a very cool tunnel) or relax on its spacious lawns. The open space where Hyde Park stands was originally Sydney Colony’s cricket ground (you can’t get more British than that) and a racecourse, but over time was developed in the same fashion as the parks of European capitals. The Archibald Memorial Fountain is a richly decorated Art Deco masterpiece. You can also visit the Hyde Park Barracks Museum which details Australia’s infamous history as a prisoner colony.

Airport travel from Town Hall Station

Sydney Airport is highly accessible from Sydney CBD via the T8 Airport & South Line route. The T8 is known for its green coloring and infrequent stops, but it’s highly useful for reaching the CBD directly from the airport. It only takes about 25 minutes but does cost about $16. You can take a taxi into the city center from the airport, but that will cost close to $80 and traffic can make it much less efficient.

Getting around Sydney from Town Hall Station

How to get to Sydney Opera House from Town Hall Station

From Town Hall Station, you can take the T8 Line directly to the Circular Quay Stop, and then walk to the Sydney Opera House. The train ride only takes about six minutes, and the 10-minute walk from the train stop to the Opera House is absolutely stunning.

How to get to the Centennial Park and University of New South Wales from Town Hall Station

This expansive green space is one of the most impressive public parks in the world, and it’s highly accessible from Sydney CBD via the L2 Randwick Light Rail Line that runs out to the southern part of the city. It’s only a 20-minute ride to the Royal Randwick stop. The UNSW Sydney Campus is also accessible via the L2 Line, with the ride from Town Hall Station only taking about 25 minutes. These light rail rides are highly affordable at about $4.

How to get to Chinatown from Town Hall Station

The bustling stretch along Dixon Street showcases Sydney’s diverse population of Asian immigrants. With spectacular restaurants and stores, some of the city’s best experiences are had in the Chinatown neighborhood. It only takes about five minutes to get here from Town Hall Station via the L3 or L2 light rail lines. There’s a Chinatown Stop that will land you right in the action!
