About Kings Cross

Kings Cross, or colloquially referred to as “The Cross,” is a buzzing inner-city locality in Sydney, a city in the Australian state of New South Wales. Situated about two kilometers east of the city’s Central Business District (CBD) and bounded by the suburbs of Darlinghurst, Elizabeth Bay, Potts Point, and Rushcutters, The Cross was once prominent for its grand music halls as well as its lavish theaters where people come to watch shows. After the Second World War, the area quickly transformed into a nightlife and entertainment spot as well as Sydney’s red light district, particularly because of the arrival of troops from the Garden Island naval base nearby. Soon enough, Kings Cross was filled with clubs, bars, and other adult entertainment venues, and it became notorious for being a seedy pocket in the city fueled by drug use and other sleazy activities.

Over the years, however, Kings Cross has undergone some major developments and slowly turned its reputation around, with more and more affluent residents and business professionals moving into the area. Today, it is now one of Sydney’s most vibrant precincts filled with a variety of real estate development, cultural attractions, lifestyle services, and entertainment centers. Locals and visitors can enjoy many activities at The Cross – from world-class dining and exciting nightlife to unique landmarks and cutting-edge theater.

Fun fact: The area was originally called “Queens Cross” in honor of Queen Victoria’s jubilee. However, the City Council replaced its name to “Kings Cross,” after King Edward VII, in 1905, to avoid confusion with Sydney’s Queens Square.

Luggage Storage Options Near Elizabeth Bay House

The Elizabeth Bay House is a Colonial Regency-style residence that is situated on 7 Onslow Avenue. It is one of the best examples of colonial architecture in the country with its geometric staircase and central oval saloon. In fact, in 1999, the building was listed in the New South Wales State Heritage. The home also has a captivating past. In 1826, then-Governor Richard Darling granted access to the land to Colonial Secretary Alexander Macleay, the second most important public official after him. In an ambitious attempt to display his affluence and status, he decided to build the grand Elizabeth Bay House in the heart of a 22-hectare garden. Unfortunately, he spent well beyond his means and eventually caused his own downfall.

Today, the once-private home is now owned by the government and has been transformed into a top attraction in Kings Cross, where guided tours are offered to the public. Guests now get the chance to take in the opulent residence and get an in-depth knowledge of its history. Oversized bags or luggage are not allowed inside the home and must be checked-in at the facility’s cloakroom. For a more secure alternative, store your things at a Bounce location in the area.
