Vienna International Airport lies roughly 18 km outside of central Vienna and is Austria’s largest flight hub. It’s the primary network for Austrian Airlines and services numerous European airline companies. When flying out of Vienna Airport, travelers can reach many European destinations and select destinations around the globe.
The airport underwent major expansion at the turn of the 21st century and eventually became suitable to accommodate 30 million passengers each year. There are four terminal buildings, terminals 1, 1A, 2, and 3, with terminal 3 being the primary zone for arriving passengers. Terminals 1 and 3 hold lounges for Austrian Airlines and other alliance networks.
Airline passengers have a wide range of options to connect to their hotel or place of residence in Vienna. The City Airport Train operates daily and provides a smooth 16-minute ride into the city center. You also have bus connections, taxi services, car rentals, carsharing, and a cycling route available. To reach other Austrian cities, use the railway connections via ÖBB Railjet.
Inside the airport, flyers will find many shops and restaurants to visit before boarding their flight. The Heinemann Duty Free Shops provides a variety of spirits, beauty products, and other souvenirs to take home. If you have time, check out the interesting Visitor World VR simulator at terminal 3. The flight gives you a bird’s eye view of dinosaurs, skyscrapers, and much more.
Due to the quick transit time between Vienna Airport and city center, there are lots of attractions to visit after your flight lands. If your time in Vienna is short, Bounce can store your belongings to help you explore the Austrian capital with ease.

St. Stephen’s Cathedral: Built in the 12th century, St. Stephen’s Cathedral is one of Vienna’s most symbolic icons. The Roman Catholic church started its life as a parish church, but Romanesque and Gothic elements highlight its grandeur today. Its towers soar above Vienna as the tallest overlooks the city at 136 meters. By climbing the stairs to the tower room, you’ll be greeted with sweeping views of Vienna.
The north tower’s Pummerin Bell is one of the grandest in Europe, and elaborate tiles adorn its roof. Walk around to the front entrance to gaze at its Romanesque façade built from limestone.
Tour the inside of the medieval church to browse through its treasures collected over the centuries. Many notable events in Austrian history transpired here, and historic figures are buried beneath the church’s catacombs. The Baroque-style High Altar is the interior’s centerpiece, but there are lots of other beautiful altars within the side chapels.
The Hofburg: Walk in the shadows of members of the royal Habsburg dynasty by visiting their former palace. The sumptuous estate dates to the 13th century and housed members of the monarchy until 1918. Today, the complex acts as the residence of the Austrian president.
Visitors can tour the imperial apartments and gather a glimpse of the luxurious lifestyle of past rulers. Each room retains its beautiful artwork and furnishings from their time as a winter retreat. The Silver Collection showcases the exquisite pieces used to throw extravagant feasts.
The Sisi Museum contains personal belongings of Empress Elisabeth, one of the most notable figures of the 19th century. You’ll find clothing, beauty products, the original death certificate, and gain insight into the life of the beloved queen.
Vienna State Opera: For centuries Austria has ranked among the world’s leaders in opera performances. Constructed in the mid-19th century, the Vienna State Opera is one of the country’s grandest stages. The 1,709-seat theater hosts hundreds of opera and ballet shows each year featuring talented artists.
As one of the world’s busiest venues, there will likely be a show scheduled during your visit. The opera house produces over 50 operas per year and shows sometimes change weekly.
Members of the regular ensemble are recruited to join the prestigious Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. There is a lengthy process for selection into the Vienna Philharmonic, and it’s considered one of the world’s top orchestras. Witnessing a performance from the accomplished group is a memorable spectacle for many Vienna visitors.

This was so cool!!!! Great service, extremely easy to use, and totally affordable! I didn't know where I'd leave my luggage while we explored San Fran, so I easily Googled luggage storage and found this company. At first it was a little odd dropping my bag off at a chocolate store, but the lady at the register was able to immediately pull up my reservation without any problems and then she put a lock on my suitcase and gave me a card to get it back with. She pushed the bag to the back of their storage room and I came back about 6 hours later to pick it up. Great service, I will definitely be using this again when I travel!
