About Vienna Meidling

Vienna’s historic city center will certainly take up plenty of time during your trip to the Austrian capital, but some of the best experiences can be had outside of Stephansplatz. Vienna’s attractive outer neighborhoods offer much in the way of cultural charm and historic significance. The most notable example is the leafy and residential Meidling, which just so happens to be hiding one of the country’s most revered landmarks.

Meidling is just outside the city center, so the neighborhood is highly accessible from central Vienna. Wien Meidling Bahnhof is a major transit hub that’s similar to Wien Hauptbahnhof in terms of facilities and usage. Long-distance and regional trains all run through Wien Meidling Bahnhof, and there are also the S-Bahn and U-Bahn lines for commuters. This allows for easy access to Meidling’s crown jewel: the Schönbrunn Palace.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Schönbrunn Palace is one of Austria’s most beloved historical landmarks. The summer residence for the reigning Habsburg monarchs for centuries, Schönbrunn’s opulent architecture and gardens bring in tens of thousands of tourists every year.

Here’s everything you need to know about Vienna Meidling:

Vienna Meidling bag policy

Meidling is a residential and historic neighborhood rather than a proper attraction, so there aren’t any bag policies associated with it. There aren’t any public facilities in Meidling where you can store your bags, so you’ll have to rely on a third-party luggage storage service while touring the neighborhood. Schönbrunn Palace, however, will have bag policies. More on that below.

Do all Vienna train stations have luggage lockers?

While a few of the main ones like Wien Hauptbahnhof and Wien Meidling will have these options, many local hubs like Wien Mitte won’t have any luggage storage options. If you need to store your luggage for a few hours or even an entire day for a flat rate at the storage lockers in a train station, you actually might be better off looking into an alternative if you’re sightseeing around Vienna. Luggage storage services like Bounce have locations throughout the city, including near the absolute best landmarks and attractions.

Can I store luggage at Wien Meidling Station?

The best option for luggage storage Vienna Meidling station has is self-service luggage lockers available to rent for a flat fee. While this could be a decent option for exploring the area, the train station is further away from landmarks like Schönbrunn Palace. There are also a finite number of lockers, so they aren’t always available.

Are there lockers at Vienna Airport?

Vienna International Airport does offer limited luggage storage service. These self-service lockers can be rented for a period of up to 18 months, although that would be quite expensive at about $6 and $10 per day for storing a standard-size item. Vienna Airport is also situated well outside the city center, making it slightly less convenient to get to your bags. This could, however, work for a quick layover if you wanted to pop into the city for a few hours.

Where can you store your luggage in Vienna’s neighborhoods?

It depends on the neighborhood, but there are plenty of luggage storage locations operated by the Bounce network throughout Vienna’s city center and outer neighborhoods. With Bounce’s mobile app, you can find the nearest location and book luggage storage ahead of time or even on the go. Bounce also offers features like 24/7 support that you won’t find in luggage lockers or other options.

Several bus lines like the 7A, 8A, 15A, 59A, and N64 all run through the Meidling area. The 10A is the most popular because it heads directly to Schönbrunn Palace. These bus rides from Central Vienna will take 30-40 minutes and only cost about $3.

Taxi and rideshare

This is a popular way to get to Meidling for travelers with significant budgets, and it can be worth it if you’re trying to get dropped off directly at Schönbrunn Palace. The drive only takes about 15 minutes from Stephansplatz, but the fare will be between $30 and $40.

Things to do near Vienna Meidling

Schönbrunn Palace

Schloss Schönbrunn was the summer residence of the Habsburgs, which you will doubtless have heard of after spending a mere 15 seconds in Vienna. This is the absolute top attraction in the Meidling neighborhood and the primary tourism draw. In fact, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is easily the top attraction outside of central Vienna.

The massive palace boasts almost 1,500 rooms, 40 of which can be toured. Visitors will be able to admire the 18th-century interiors and eclectic aesthetics ranging from Neoclassical to Renaissance. A highlight of the tour includes access to the private rooms of Franz Joseph and Empress Sisi, two legends of 19th-century political and romantic intrigue. A guided tour is ideal, but you can also simply take an audio tour if you want to take in the palace at your own pace. Booking tickets ahead of time for access to the palace and a tour is highly recommended, especially during peak travel season.

Schönbrunn Palace bag policy

For security purposes, all larger items and bags (including backpacks) aren’t allowed inside the palace. There is a cloakroom for bulky coats and umbrellas, but most visitors will have to stash some of their belongings in the cloakroom. All larger bags will have to be placed in the storage lockers located on the lower ground floor’s Group Centre.

Schloss Schönbrunn Gardens

Assuming the weather cooperates, you shouldn’t visit the palace without taking a stroll through the surrounding expansive lawns and gardens. The sprawling Schlosspark is an entire complex filled with French-style gardens, groves of trees, and acres of walking paths.

While the gardens hit their peak during the spring, it’s an all-season affair at the Schönbrunn Gardens. The autumn colors make the place profoundly photogenic, and it’s gorgeous even during the winter, especially after fresh snow. There’s also the Baroque Irrgarten hedge maze, which is the perfect place to get lost with the kids (this will be the highlight of their trip to Schönbrunn). For something a little more exotic, head to the Kronprinzengarten, which is lined with citrus trees and imported plants.

Imperial Carriage Museum

While you’re visiting Meidling, you might as well take in the absolute maximum amount of imperial experiences. One thing you can tack on to a visit to Schönbrunn is the Imperial Carriage Museum. It’s situated on the palace grounds but is its own structure. You’ll get to view the wonderfully preserved antique carriages the imperial family used to get around their palace grounds and throughout Vienna. There are over 600 unique vehicles of the Habsburg carriage fleet, and they’re all lined up in the "Sisi Path.” The most impressive carriage is the eye-catching black “hearse” used to carry the remains of royals to the imperial cemetery.
