About Vienna Erdberg

Situated on the banks of the Danube, Erdberg is one of the Vienna neighborhoods absolutely worth leaving the city center for. Not only are there plenty of the city’s top landmarks nearby, but the cultural offerings, restaurant scene, and nightlife are all worth checking out. This is a residential area, with a mix of professionals, students, creatives, and twenty-somethings that make the neighborhood the ideal place for travelers to “live like a local.” Sights like the Gasometer buildings are cultural hotspots that only well-researched travelers get to.

Erdberg is highly accessible from the city center, as well. With the U3 U-Bahn Subway line running right through the area, you can reach Erdberg’s top attractions in less than 20 minutes from central Vienna. Here’s everything you need to know:

Vienna Erdberg bag policy

Situated in the Landstraße district, Erdberg is one of Vienna’s best neighborhoods. This means there won’t be any bag policies associated with visiting Erdberg. It doesn’t make lugging the bags around all afternoon any better, though. Luckily, there are luggage storage services operating in Erdberg like Bounce that offer secure and convenient locations for storing bags while sightseeing.

Are there storage lockers at Vienna Airport?

Vienna International Airport offers self-service luggage lockers at Terminal 3. For standard-size items (this would be a backpack, suitcase, or roller bag), you can expect to pay about $9 per day with access between 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. For a larger piece, you’ll spend over $11 per day. Surprisingly, you can use these lockers for up to 18 months, although this would rack the luggage storage cost quite a bit. The primary downside of this option is that there aren’t any customer service components, and the airport is fairly out of the way if you need to access your belongings quickly. That said, it’s not a terrible option for a few hours on quick layovers in Vienna.

Is there luggage storage at Erdberg Station?

The Erdberg Station on the U3 Line of Vienna’s U-Bahn system is more of a train stop than a full facility. Because of this, there will be highly limited amenities, none of which are luggage storage options. There are services that offer luggage storage in Vienna, namely the Bounce network, which has locations directly serving the Erdberg area.

Where can I store luggage in Vienna?

Certain attractions and transit hubs will have lockers, but these aren’t always reliable. The best option for luggage storage Vienna Erdberg would be facilities operated by a service. There are a few to choose from, but the overwhelming majority of veteran travelers trust luggage storage facilities operated by Bounce. Bounce partners with local shops in major cities like Vienna to provide its customers with the best possible locations. Bounce also vets each location to provide the most secure luggage storage on the market and backs it up with $10,000 BounceShield Protection. Bounce also provides 24/7 customer support from a dedicated team, providing the most stress-free experience available.

How to get to Vienna Erdberg

Erdberg is one of the closer neighborhoods to the city center and is fairly easy to reach. Here are a few of the most common transportation methods for reaching Erdberg from the historic city center of Vienna (where you'll spend most of your trip).

  • Train: The U3 Subway line is the primary transportation method locals use to reach Erdberg attractions like the Gasometer buildings. From central places like Stephansplatz, you can take a 10-minute train ride along the U3 and be in Erdberg. There is also the #18 Tram that runs from the Ringstrasse and stops at Erdberg Station, though this is slightly less efficient. These public transportation rides all cost about $3, making it a highly affordable option for getting back and forth between the neighborhood and central Vienna.
  • Bus: This is a much less efficient way to get around Vienna, as it will take between 20 and 30 minutes on the 74A or 80A bus lines to reach Erdberg Station.
  • Taxi and rideshare: Always the quickest way to get anywhere, a taxi or Uber will only take about 10 minutes to get from central Vienna to the main stretch of Erdberg on Döblerhofstraße. A taxi or cab ride will cost between $25 and $40 depending on the time of day. During rush hour, it might not be worth it as you’ll save much less time than the additional cost can justify.

How to get to Vienna Erdberg from Vienna Airport

As far as public transportation goes, Erdberg takes about half an hour to reach from Vienna Airport. You’ll want to take the CAT (City Airport Train) from the airport station to the Wien Mitte Landstraße station, and then transfer to the U3 Subway. From there, you can get off at either Erdberg Station or the Gasometer stop. Even with the transfer, it takes about 30 minutes and only costs $6.

How to get to Vienna Erdberg from Vienna Central Station

Although these two Vienna train stations aren't directly connected, you can still get between Hauptbahnhof Wien and Erdberg Station in about 15 minutes. All you’ll have to do is take the S8 S-Bahn Train from Hauptbahnhof and transfer to the U3 at Wien Simmering station. The whole trip is a breeze and only costs $4. This is the most common way to get to Erdberg for travelers who train into Vienna from other European cities.

Things to do near Vienna Erdberg

Schloss Belvedere

Situated just a few U-Bahn stops from Erdberg, Schloss Belvedere is one of Vienna’s top destinations. This baroque masterpiece is just another palatial estate that’s remarkably survived centuries of political upheaval. It was built as a gift for an Austrian military leader who beat back the Ottomans back in the early 18th century.

With two palaces, the Upper Belvedere (Oberes Belvedere), and Lower Belvedere (Unteres Belvedere), you’ll have at least a full afternoon of sights to see when visiting the complex. While they were built as lavish residences, both palaces have become de facto art museums. You’ll find art-nouveau works by the most famous Austrian artists in the Upper Belvedere along with seemingly endless halls (especially the fabulous marble hall) lined with dozens of frescoes from a wide range of artistic styles. The gardens are no slouches, either. These expansive French-style gardens are wonderfully manicured and dotted with sculptures.

Schloss Belvedere bag policy

For security purposes, all luggage and larger items are prohibited from the premises. There are small lockers (unsecured) that are complementary to use, but these are too small to handle any luggage. It’s best to arrange luggage storage through Bounce before visiting.

KunstHausWien

Designed by the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, this quirky art museum is a treasure trove of inventive modern art from the artist. The privately owned and operated business operates the museum, art space, workshops, and event space, with temporary exhibits and artists showcases frequently taking over the KunstHausWien.

The building itself is a work of art, with its iconic zany ceramics, checkerboard facade, and technicolor tilework making it stand out from the neighboring buildings. With a plume of leaves from the rooftop garden overhanging, it’s impossible to miss the KunstHausWien. With inventive methods and one of the most distinctive aesthetics imaginable, it’s no wonder why the KunstHausWien has become a top destination for art enthusiasts and creatives. The Landstraße district seems to have built up a bohemian culture around the museum. This explains why the KunstHausWien is on the itinerary for every trendy traveler who makes their way through Vienna.

KunstHausWien bag policy

All larger items, including luggage, bulky coats, umbrellas, and other belongings must be kept in the museum’s cloakroom, which is free to use. Space is limited, so it’s just another reason to get to the KunstHausWien early.

Gasometer Buildings

In the 19th century, natural gas became one of the key fuels for Vienna’s infrastructure. Everything from industrial to residential buildings was powered and lit through the gas. Before the pipes and delivery systems were built up, the supply of gas needed to be stored locally. Vienna built four massive round buildings with red brick in the Erdberg area to power the nearby areas.

Once this practice was shifted further away from residential areas, the four “Gasometer” buildings in Erdberg were abandoned. With distinctive red brick facades deemed too attractive to be torn down, these buildings were repurposed into an apartment and entertainment complex. The former industrial bones of the buildings are still intact, making it a fascinating place to shop. Fun fact: these four buildings were even featured in a James Bond movie from the 1970s!
