About Walter E. Washington Convention Center

The Walter E. Washington Convention Center is not just a place for meetings and events, it is an architectural beauty. Located on Mount Vernon Place Northwest, the 703,000 square-foot building won an award in 2006 from the American Institute of Architects for its beauty and modern features. Thespace boasts several exhibit halls, banquet rooms, and even a ballroom that has 52,000 square feet. The main focal point is the grand lobby with granite floors, towering glass walls, and a huge staircase.

The building was built in 1874 and was the first convention center in DC. Besides hosting events, the center also has over 130 works of art by more than 90 artists. In fact, it is the largest public art collection in the city that is not in a museum. Some of the most popular events held in the convention center include the 65th annual Radio and Television Dinner with former President Barack Obama in 2009, the 57th annual Presidential Inauguration Ball with the Obamas and Bidens in attendance, and the largest science festival in the world in 2014 with 350,000 guests.

Outside the center, you can visit the Carnegie Library, the Kennedy Recreation Center, or any of the other attractions nearby. There are literally dozens of parks to explore, malls to peruse, and eateries to enjoy. For a bit of culture, you can visit one of the museums or monuments around the city. And don’t leave DC without at least seeing the White House.

Fun Fact: The center is in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the largest dinner with 16,206 people who attended. This was the Alpha Kappa Alpha Centennial Boule Dinner in 2009.
