Flower Burger

What it's like:

If you are looking for pizza, this is not your restaurant. Flower Burger is a vegan fast-food chain in Italy that serves up some of the most creative burgers in the restaurant business. The buns come in a rainbow of colors, including orange, green, purple, yellow, and pink. Most of the burgers on the menu are available all the time, but there is always one special that changes from time to time.

Our recommendation:

One special burger available on occasion is the Ladybug. It has a red bun made from red paprika and beetroot and is topped with black sesame seeds to give the "ladybug" look. The patty is made of pea and rice topped with fresh tomato sauce, basil sauces, lettuce, rocket, and tomato.

Not only are the buns different depending on the burger, but so are the patties. They are all 100% vegan and created to complement the other ingredients of the burger. Everything is made fresh and in-house, including all the vegan cheese. And it is served in a funky atmosphere with great music.

Throw in a side of fries or crispy Flower Bombs (not made with actual flowers), and you have a great meal. But make sure to leave room for dessert, like their Tiramisu or Chocolate Salami. It doesn't matter if you like meat or not, this restaurant is strongly recommended for anyone who loves good burgers, and the prices are great too.

Location:

Via Torquato Tasso, 52, Bergamo, Italy

Veg Eat Cucina Naturale Biologica

What it's like:

Veg Eat Cucina Naturale Biologica was the first 100% plant-based restaurant in Bergamo. It quickly gained an excellent reputation for not just being a great vegan restaurant but a restaurant that serves great food for everyone. They understood that turning 100% plant-based dishes into something healthy and flavourful was, and is the biggest challenge, but they have succeeded in doing it.

The menu is created with love and fresh, natural seasonal ingredients. Preparing dishes in this way means the menu changes on a regular basis. However, you will normally find great vegan dishes like tofu curry, red lentil cakes, and focaccia with spelt flour and Kamut.

Our recommendation:

The meals are suitable for those that have intolerances as they are lactose-free, egg-free, and many are gluten-free. They keep their website up to date, so we recommend you check it to see what's for lunch or dinner before you head to the restaurant.

The menu is designed to allow the customer more variety in what they choose to eat. The first course, sides, and desserts are all the same price, and the second courses are also very inexpensive. The customer basically gets to create their own delicious meal.

Location:

Contrada dei Tre Passi, 1, Bergamo, Italy

I Buoni Sani

What it's like:

I Buoni Sani is not just a vegan restaurant, it is an entire vegan concept. The owner, Laura, believes food is not just for curbing your hunger but should feed and nourish your body and soul too. Her cuisine style is derived from macrobiotics and combines western health science with eastern flair and flavor.

Our recommendation:

The menu changes daily as it is completely based on fresh organic, sustainable local products. But the food is always colorful and tasty, and the restaurant provides a cozy atmosphere and great service. After the main meal, there is an amazing dessert menu that includes tasty fruit mousses, puddings, cakes, and more.

I Buoni Sani also culinary courses and food coaching to help people live a healthier lifestyle. The sessions are individual and encourage good food-eating habits without resorting to fad dieting. We suggest you take a course to change your family's eating habits, or if you are just curious, find out how food can help your mind and body.

Sweet Irene

What it's like:

This vegetarian restaurant was opened by Lucca and Irene in 2003 and has been going strong ever since. Sweet Irene serves vegetarian and vegan dishes plus an amazing variety of gluten-free, vegan pastries. The duo has designed the menu to be a reflection of traditional Italian food with a mix of vegetarian innovations. They serve simple cuisine that is natural and of excellent quality and tastes great.

Our recommendation:

The menu changes weekly with daily specials that are sure to satisfy everyone's hunger. Vegetarian omelets, lasagna, sandwiches, and pizza can be enjoyed in the lively atmosphere of this cozy restaurant. Lucca and Irene also provide super friendly service in the restaurant, or you can call ahead and grab some takeaway or have the delicious food delivered to wherever you are staying.

The desserts are to die for as well: spicy bonbons, carrot or cappuccino cupcakes, coffee cheesecake, decadent chocolate cake, and artisan vegan gelato are all on the menu. You may need to visit a couple of times to try them all. Whether you are looking for breakfast, lunch, or a quick snack, Sweet Irene is a great choice.

Assaje Gourmet Pizzeria

What it's like:

Many restaurants in Bergamo serve good pizza. But to have a truly excellent pizza, you need to go somewhere where they specialize in great pizza, and that is exactly what you get at Assaje. The pizza makers in all four restaurants in Italy are trained at the highest level by Maestro Pizzaiolo Marco di Giovanni. The restaurant is not a vegetarian restaurant as most of the dishes contain meat. However, they do have vegetarian and vegan pizzas and other items available on the menu.

Our recommendation:

With ingredients like vegan mortadella, salami, and mozzarella, you will still get all the great flavors of a traditional Neapolitan pizza with a healthier twist. If you are not in the mood for pizza, try the vegetarian eggplant parmigiana or buffalo mozzarella. The decor of the restaurant is warm and welcoming with nice service, and the prices are very affordable.

Location:

Largo di Porta S. Alessandro, 1, Bergamo, Italy

Guru Ganesh

What it's like:

Since 2000 this Indian restaurant has been serving some of the best vegetarian and vegan cuisine in Bergamo. This is not a strictly vegetarian restaurant, in fact, most of the menu contains meat, poultry, and some seafood. But one of the best things about Indian restaurants is that you know you are going to be able to find vegetarian food that is full of flavor.

Our recommendation:

At Guru Ganesh, you will find delicious masalas, curries, and paneers all made with traditional Indian recipes made with the freshest ingredients. During the week, the place is open for dinner only, but on the weekend, you can grab lunch from noon until 2 pm. Besides the amazing cuisine, the family-run restaurant has very friendly service, making it an excellent place to enjoy a fantastic meal.

Location:

Via c. Baioni, 45, Bergamo, Italy

Asian Mix

What it's like:

When you want a break from pizzas and are craving Asian food but can't decide between Japanese or Chinese, head to Asian Mix. The restaurant serves meat, poultry, and seafood, but it also has some delicious vegetarian and vegan options too. The chefs are very accommodating and will gladly make any of the "meat" dishes into vegetarian ones if they can.

Our recommendation:

The Chinese side of the menu is a little smaller than the Japanese. But it has some fantastic Chinese plates like cashew chicken, salmon fried rice, and chicken & tea sauce, all of which can be made vegetarian or vegan. The Japanese menu has all the standards, sushi, tempura, ramen, and more. You can expect friendly service whenever you are dining at the restaurant.

There are very few Chinese or Japanese restaurants in Bergamo to choose from, so it is nice to know that you can get great food of either kind in one place.

Location:

Via Don Luigi Palazzolo, 40, Bergamo, Italy

Al Sultan

What it's like:

AL Sultan is not considered one of Bergamo's vegetarian or vegan restaurants as it serves meals with meat. However, it has many vegan and vegetarian options. The food is typical of Middle Eastern/Mediterranean cuisine with falafels, shwarmas, pizza, and kebabs. It is a small and nice restaurant that gets very busy between 1 pm and 2:30 pm with locals on their lunch break.

Our recommendation:

The restaurant is located in the center of town on the Piazza Pontida and attracts plenty of tourists looking for a delicious meal without spending a lot of money. At the end of each meal, the owner serves a delicious tea which gives you a good reason to stay and enjoy the nice atmosphere of the piazza. It is open for dinner or late snacks, which is one of the best times to have a kebab.

Location:

Piazza Pontida, 28, Bergamo, Italy

Casual Ristorante Enrico Bartolini

What it's like:

Casual is anything but casual. This is quite simply one of the best restaurants in Bergamo – it has earned a Michelin star for its fantastic food and impeccable service. It serves meat, seafood, and other non-vegetarian meals, but it also offers meals that are vegan, gluten-free, and for any other special dietary needs.

Our recommendation:

The Italian restaurant has a menu that reflects the seasons of the province of Bergamo, using only the best quality ingredients the region has to offer. Even the setting is amazing. The restaurant is located in Citta Alta and has a panoramic terrace with a stunning view of the Po Valley and the Apennine Mountains. Going to Casual will cost you some money, but a meal at this restaurant is more than just good food, it is a food experience.

Location:

Via S. Vigilio, 1, Bergamo, Italy

Mexicali

What it's like:

Add a little spice and grab some food at Mexicali, a Mexican restaurant chain in Italy. Like any good Mexican restaurant, they serve tacos, tortillas, burritos, fajitas, and more. This is an excellent restaurant where carnivores, vegans, and vegetarians can all come together and enjoy good food and good times.

Our recommendation:

The normal fillings for the burritos and others can be substituted with vegan cheese, vegan mayo, and vegetables like zucchini, carrots, and celery. And if you can't handle spicy, just let the servers know, and they can turn down the heat. The dessert lineup includes a delicious gluten-free chocolate and pear cake.

Location:

Via Giovanni Carnovali, 92, Bergamo, Italy

Dahlak

What it's like:

Every list has a hidden gem, and on this one, it is Dahlak, Eritrea food that has a little kick of spicy and a whole lot of flavor. If you have never had Eritrea or Ethiopian food before, you must try this place. The couple that own this good restaurant are extremely helpful and friendly and will guide you through the menu.

Our recommendation:

The menu is not huge, but the choices are delicious and fun to eat. Almost every dish, whether it is meat or veggie-based, is served with enjera, a large traditional four-grain bread used for eating the meal. You can use a knife and fork, but where's the fun in that? Try the puff pastry stuffed with chickpeas, onions and spices, lentil stews, or couscous with veggies. And after the meal, relax with one of their spiced teas, a perfect way to finish the experience.

Via Borgo Palazzo, 82/l, Bergamo, Italy
