Things to do in Copenhagen City Centre

As the capital of the country, Copenhagen is home to most of Denmark’s major institutions.  The cultural hub of the region, Copenhagen is full of great things to see, places to eat, and experiences to enjoy.

As the heart of the city, the city center is the place to explore everything Copenhagen has to offer. Staying somewhere central allows you to visit as many of Copenhagen's attractions as possible. It also means you're never far away from another great restaurant or lively bar. Make sure to check out:

  • Denmark is one of Europe's last remaining monarchies, and Rosenborg Castle in the heart of Copenhagen was the home of the Danish royal family until 1710. A museum on-site explains the history of the monarchy and the country, and the palace sits in fabulous gardens.
  • Denmark’s Natural History Museum is just across the street from the Rosenborg Palace. The museum houses impressive exhibits of plant and animal life, including dinosaurs.
  • For more Danish history, visit the National Museum of Denmark. This museum houses priceless artworks and artifacts from the very earliest period of human settlement in Denmark up until the present day.
  • The Little Mermaid may be Copenhagen's most famous resident. Inspired by the work of Hans Christian Anderson, the statue is the place to capture an iconic Copenhagen photo.
  • With its flat topography, mild weather, and abundant bike lanes, Copenhagen is one of the world's most bikable cities. Leave your bags at a luggage storage facility and head out on a bike tour to explore the city the way the locals do.
  • Copenhagen is famous for its abundant canals, and a boat tour is the perfect way to explore them. More than just a relaxing time on the water, a guided tour will take you to some of the most important locations in the city’s history and give you a deeper understanding of what you’re seeing.
  • Copenhagen isn’t short of picturesque districts, but Nyhavn might be the most charming of all. Formally a bustling harbor, the multicolored 17th and 18th-century houses that line the canals will make you feel like you've taken a trip back in time. Plus, its abundant restaurants and bars make a great place to spend an evening.

Attractions and activities near Copenhagen City Centre

  • The Round Tower: This 17th-century observation tower is a Copenhagen landmark, with its distinctive spiral ramp instead of stairs. It houses a planetarium and offers panoramic views over the city.
  • The Old Stock Exchange: Up until 1974, this historic building was the home of the Danish answer to Wall Street. Its opulent interior and famous Dragon spire make it one of Denmark’s architectural marvels.
  • Tivoli Gardens: This old-fashioned amusement park offers rides, games, food, and sometimes concerts and has been one of Copenhagen’s top attractions since it opened in the 19th century. Located right next to the central station, a visit here is almost inevitable.
