About Milan Duomo

Milan Cathedral, or Duomo in Italian, is the city's most iconic building. This stunning Gothic masterpiece is the largest church in Italy - St. Peter's Basilica in Rome is technically part of the Vatican, a separate nation - and the 2nd largest in Europe. Its breathtaking façade and stunning 3400 statues have made it one of the world's most recognized buildings.

Although construction of the Cathedral started in 1386, it wasn't fully completed until 1965. Through the years, the Cathedral played host to some major events, including the coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte as the King of Italy. It is also home to some priceless artworks, including Marco d'Agrate's statue of St. Bartholomew Flayed from 1562. Plus, it is reputed to contain one of the nails used in the crucifixion of Jesus, which is exhibited once a year to believers.

The Duomo occupies the heart of old Milan, and the city is laid out so that all roads ultimately lead to this point. The square outside the cathedral is one of Milan's liveliest. If you don't visit the Duomo, it's almost as though you were never really in Milan at all.

Things to do near Milan Duomo

The cathedral itself is one of Milan's most popular tourist attractions. You could easily spend a day or more here, studying the endless riches of the elaborate building itself. But the central location of this massive church means it's also close to many of the city's other most popular things to do. Starting at the cathedral itself, you can begin your exploration of central Milan and take in much of what makes the city so fascinating.

  • Get a bird's eye view of the city from the roof of the cathedral. The duomo's rooftop terraces allow you to see statues that are otherwise invisible. It also lets you look out across Milan and capture stunning photographs of the surrounding area. It's a good idea to get tickets in advance for this popular activity.
  • Go window shopping at the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. This ornate 1800s covered shopping gallery is right beside the Duomo, and is a temple to Milan's other religion: fashion. Even if your budget doesn't stretch to the goods offered at stores such as Prada, Ferragamo, and Gucci, the gallery is worth a visit for its architecture alone. Plus, the many cafes allow you to sit back and people-watch amid the best-dressed crowd you're ever likely to see.
  • Bask in the opulence of La Scala theater. This legendary opera house is one of the world's most iconic music venues. First opened in 1778, the city has seen performances by all the greatest stars of the opera world. Tours are available during the day, but to really appreciate this building's magnificence, it's best to see if you can get tickets to a show.
  • Uncover the history of Milan at Sforzesco Castle. This 15th-century fortification was once one of Europe's largest and was the seat of local power until the unification of Italy in 1861. Nowadays, the castle houses a museum that tells the story of the powerful Sforza family and the subsequent rulers of Milan.
  • Explore the natural world at the Milan Natural History Museum. Housed in a 19th-century building, this collection of animal specimens from around the world is a hit with kids, especially the popular dinosaur exhibit.

Transit options near Milan Duomo

  • The Duomo subway station is right outside the cathedral and is served by lines 1 and 3 of the Milan Metro system.
  • Tramlines 12, 16, 19 all stop at the west end of the piazza in front of the Cathedral.
  • Buses NM1, NM3, and 54 all stop at the Duomo piazza.
