About Chinatown

Located in the heart of Center City, Chinatown is one of Philadelphia’s most culturally rich neighborhood. The neighborhood is home to the city’s immigrant Chinese population, and still sees a large number of new residents coming in from New York every year. Originally started in the late 19th century by Cantonese merchants and businesspeople, the neighborhood boomed and continued to grow over the following decades. Today, Chinatown has a vibrant eating scene and draws in thousands of visitors and locals each year. The neighborhood also features the Chinatown Friendship Gate, the first authentic Chinese Gate built in the United States.
