About Bairro Alto

Centrally located in the heart of Lisbon, the Bairro Alto, or Upper Neighborhood, was the result of the city’s expansion in the sixteenth century. Designed as a kind of early suburb, the Bairro Alto escaped much of the destruction caused by the 1755 earthquake that destroyed most of old Lisbon. 

The neighborhood was once the home of Lisbon’s upper crust. But in the course of the twentieth century, the neighborhood slowly changed to a younger demographic. With automobiles severely restricted from the neighborhood, it has become one of the main nightlife and entertainment districts of the city. Thanks to the presence of many trendy bars and restaurants, is the place where Lisbon’s young and beautiful come to let down their hair and have a good time. And it also attracts thousands of foreign visitors looking for a taste of the Portuguese lifestyle.

To this day, the Bairro Alto remains a lively and vibrant neighborhood. If you’re looking to have some fun in Lisbon when the sun goes down, chances are good you’ll end up here.
