About Boston Aquarium
The New England Aquarium is a massive public aquarium located in the city of Boston in Massachusetts. Situated on Boston’s scenic Central Wharf, the aquarium is one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions and a favorite hangout spot for friends and families. It is often referred to as the Boston Aquarium by the residents because of its location within the city. Established in 1969, the aquarium welcomes over a million visitors every year. However, more than just a tourist hotspot, the facility is also a global leader in ocean exploration and marine conservation. In fact, the aquarium has launched several marine-related programs as well as being a main educational resource.
The New England Aquarium’s centerpiece is the Great Ocean Tank (GOT), a 200,000-gallon structure made to resemble an actual reef. The tank contains more than 100 different marine creatures, including sharks, sea turtles, tropical fish, eels, and a whole lot more. The aquarium also has several other sections and exhibits where you can find other aquatic creatures such as penguins, sea lions, and more. Other facilities at the New England Aquarium include an IMAX Theater and the Whale Watch cruise. This excursion takes place from April to November, where guests can observe different whale species in their natural habitat.
Fun fact: Ever since it opened, the New England Aquarium has hatched and raised over 80 penguins. The aquarium's sea life rescue program returns about 90% of injured or sick sea turtles back into the open water.
